Statins tied to lower risk of fatal prostate cancer (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? In a new study of middle-aged New Jersey men, taking cholesterol-lowering drugs was linked to a lower chance of dying from prostate cancer.

The findings don't prove that the drugs, called statins, ward off aggressive cancer. But they jibe with previous studies suggesting that getting cholesterol levels under control might help reduce the risk of life-threatening disease, researchers said.

"People may be on these medications for their heart, but it may actually be doing them some good for their prostate," said study author Dr. Stephen Marcella, from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in New Brunswick.

"If a person's on the fence about taking a statin medication for their heart, this is another potential benefit they may have by taking one of these," he told Reuters Health.

Marcella and his colleagues collected the medical records of 380 men who had died of prostate cancer and another 380 of the same age and race without prostate cancer or with non-lethal cancer.

Most of the men were white and in their mid- to late-60s, on average. Close to one in four of the men in both groups combined had ever taken a statin.

The researchers found that men who died of prostate cancer were half as likely to have taken a statin at any time, and for any duration, than men in the "control" group.

When they accounted for whether or not men were overweight and their other health problems and medications, it turned out that those with fatal cancers were 63 percent less likely to have ever taken a statin, according to findings published in Cancer.

But, Marcella added, "I would not tell a person if they don't have a risk of heart disease, (if) they don't have hypertension...to take a statin just to prevent lethal prostate cancer."

The evidence that's effective, he said, just isn't there yet.

And even if statins do turn out to help prevent fatal prostate cancer, researchers said, previous studies have suggested they don't lower a man's risk of getting less aggressive forms of the disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, about one in every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point, and one in every 36 men will die of the disease.

Marcella's team didn't have the data to figure out if taking a statin for longer, or starting one earlier, was more beneficial than more limited use of the drugs.

'VERY TRICKY TO SORT OUT'

The researchers also couldn't tell whether men started using statins before or after they were diagnosed with aggressive cancer.

But they did find that while high-potency, often newer statins were linked to a lower risk of fatal prostate cancer, lower-potency drugs were not. That suggests it's something about the drugs themselves that lower men's chances of dying from prostate cancer, Marcella said.

Statins may protect against fatal prostate cancer through their known cholesterol-lowering effects, said Dr. Stephen Freedland, who studies prostate cancer at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, but wasn't involved in the new study.

He said that cholesterol is a "key nutrient" for cancer cells, so lower cholesterol levels in the body could prevent more aggressive forms of cancer from developing.

But it's also possible that statins don't prevent certain cancers at all, Freedland said, and it's something else about men who take statins -- for example, if they also change their diet and start exercising -- that explains their lower risk of fatal cancer.

"It gets very, very tricky to sort out," Freedland told Reuters Health.

To prove that statins protect against aggressive cancer would require a large study in which cancer-free men, or those with early-stage disease, are randomly assigned to take statins or not and then tracked for years to see how many of them die from cancer.

That type of study, especially involving healthy, disease-free men, would be very expensive and time consuming, said Dr. Nelly Tan, from the University of California, Los Angeles, who has studied statins and prostate cancer risk.

About one-quarter of adults age 45 and older in the U.S. take statins to lower cholesterol and protect against heart attacks. The drugs run anywhere from $11 to more than $200 per month, and sometimes cause side effects including muscle pain, nausea and gas and liver dysfunction.

Researchers agreed that until there's clearer evidence for benefit, men with healthy hearts shouldn't seek out statin prescriptions for the purpose of lowering their prostate cancer risks.

But Freedland said that other strategies for lowering cholesterol -- such as eating better and exercising regularly -- are ways almost everyone can lower their disease risks in the meantime.

PFT: Four guns stolen from Panther LB's truck

New York Giants v New York JetsGetty Images

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has taken a lot of criticism from fans and the media. But he says he has no doubt that within the locker room, he has unconditional support.

Asked at his press conference today if he is confident that everyone in the locker room supports him, Sanchez answered, ?Absolutely, no question.?

Sanchez offered a similar answer when asked if he thinks he has improved during his three-year NFL career.

?No question, absolutely,? Sanchez said. ?Whether it?s defensive recognition or clock management and stuff like that, understanding the offense and the system, I?m light years ahead, so it?s been a great run so far and we?re not done yet. Hopefully, we?ll get a win and see what happens.?

But watching Sanchez, it?s hard to see how he has really improved in terms of his defensive recognition and clock management. He still makes too many mental mistakes, and he wastes timeouts too often to claim he has improved at clock management.

Ball security is also a huge problem for Sanchez, who fumbled 10 times in his rookie year, nine times last year and has fumbled 10 times this year. Those ball security problems were largely overlooked in his first two seasons because the Jets recovered seven of his 10 fumbles his rookie year and eight of his nine fumbles his second year. But this year the Jets have only recovered two of Sanchez?s 10 fumbles, and the problem of a quarterback who puts the ball on the ground too much has become more apparent.

Ultimately, Sanchez probably got too much credit when the Jets got to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in his first two years, and now he?s probably getting too much blame for the Jets likely missing the playoffs.

?We went to the AFC Championship two years in a row, so there is only one more step to make really, win that game and then go win the Super Bowl,? Sanchez said. ?With those expectations, that?s fine. When things don?t go right, people are going to immediately question me.?

No one said playing quarterback for the New York Jets would be easy.

Russia slams US for its human rights record (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia's Foreign Ministry has attacked America's human rights record in its first report on injustice elsewhere in the world, offering examples such as the Guantanamo Bay prison and wrongful death row convictions to paint the U.S. as hypocritical for lecturing other nations on the subject of rights.

"The situation in the United States is a far cry from the ideals that Washington proclaims," says the report released Wednesday.

Moscow has previously reacted angrily to the accusations of human rights breaches that the U.S. State Department has leveled at Russia in its annual reports. The State Department has expressed concern about the violent attacks on rights activists and journalists in Russia, most of which go unpunished. It also has criticized abuses in Russia's Caucasus, including extrajudicial killings, kidnappings and torture.

The 90-page Russian report slams EU nations, Canada and Georgia, but reserves its longest section of 20 pages for what it says are violations by the United States. The report does not cover Asia, Africa or the Middle East, other than a five-page section criticizing the NATO operation in Libya.

Moscow laments the ongoing operation of the "notorious" prison in Guantanamo Bay, where terrorism suspects have been held since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and criticizes President Barack Obama for "legalizing indefinite and extrajudicial custody and the return of court martials."

The report accuses the U.S. of prying into citizens' personal lives and violating the rights of Muslim Americans in the fight against terrorism. It also points to errors made by American courts.

"Judicial errors are the Achilles heel of American justice as concerns capital punishment," the report argues. It notes the roughly 130 people sentenced to death in the past 30 years who were later cleared of the charges, some after they were executed.

The Foreign Ministry also struck back at international criticism of Russia's recent parliamentary election, which independent observers said involved widespread fraud. Outrage over the vote set off a spate of protests led by citizens unhappy with Vladimir Putin's rule.

The report accuses the U.S. of blocking independent candidates from elections and criticizes the practice of allowing governors to nominate senators when a Senate seat is vacated, as when Obama became president. It refers to the conviction this year of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was accused of trying to auction off Obama's Senate seat.

The State Department is reviewing the Russian report, spokesman Mark Toner said. He said such reports can be a "useful mechanism provided that they are produced using objective methodology."

"We certainly don't regard it as interference in our internal affairs when foreign governments, individuals or organizations comment on or criticize U.S. human rights practices," he said, adding later, "In terms of our human rights record, we're an open book."

Wednesday NCAA: Georgetown Hoyas (10-1) at Louisville Cardinals (12-0)

WagerWeb.com ? NCAAB

27 December 2011 No Comment

It?s arguably the best night of the season in college basketball on Wednesday with the Big East and Big Ten conference schedules really getting going and a handful of Top-25 matchups on the schedule. The best one appears to be between No. 12 Georgetown and No. 4 Louisville, with the Cards, one of only a few unbeatens left in the country, opening as college basketball bets favorites on WagerWeb.com.

Georgetown enters off an impressive 70-59 win over previously ranked Memphis on Dec. 22. Senior guard Jason Clark led four Hoyas in double figures with 18 points. The victory was the Hoyas second over the Tigers this season, having defeated them on November 23, 91-88 in overtime at the Maui Invitational. It was the eighth-straight win for the Hoyas, tying the team?s season-long win streak of last season as the team started 10-1 for the fifth-straight season.

Senior center has been the breakout start this year, averaging 12.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg. Prior to this season, the Hoyas? 6-foot-10 big man never averaged more than 3.6 points or 3.2 rebounds per game.

The Hoyas have played three teams who were ranked at the time so far this year, beating then-No. 12 Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Dec. 1, then-No. 8 Memphis and losing to No. 14 Kansa, also in Maui, 67-63 back on Nov. 21.

Louisville has rarely been challenged so far this season and has faced only one ranked club so far, beating then-No. 19 Vanderbilt 62-60 in overtime. The Cards last took the court on Dec. 23, a 70-60 win over Western Kentucky. Sophomores Gorgui Dieng and Russ Smith have been playing very well of late. Dieng has five straight double-doubles (he leads the Big East in blocks and is second in rebounding), and Smith has reached double figures in each of Louisville?s last four games to position the Cardinals within a game of matching their best start in program history. The 12-0 start is the school?s best in 37 years.

However, to beat Georgetown and Kentucky, which plays Louisville this weekend, the Cards need more from star guard Peyton Siva. He has more turnovers than points in Louisville?s last two games ? in the past three games Louisville has had to rally to win.

Georgetown leads the all-time series 7-4. The last meeting came Jan. 31, 2011 in Washington D.C., a 62-59 Hoyas win. However, Louisville has won three straight Big East openers.

Thailand, Cambodia aim for offshore oil development

PHNOM PENH | Thu Dec 29, 2011 3:19am EST

PHNOM PENH Dec 29 (Reuters) - Offshore oil and gas reserves in disputed waters of the Gulf of Thailand could take up to a decade to tap, despite progress between Thailand and Cambodia towards restarting talks on joint development, Thailand's energy minister said on Thursday.

The two countries are keen to reach an agreement on joint exploration and development of the Overlapping Claim Area (OCA) in the Gulf, which has been delayed by political upheaval in Thailand and sometimes deadly border disputes.

Thai Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan said Thailand would seek parliamentary approval to restore a decade-old Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries that was scrapped by the previous government when relations deteriorated.

Negotiations on joint development and revenue-sharing would soon follow, he added.

"There are processes that need to be done on both sides but the intention was very good, the relationship was very good and we're certain in the future there'll be no more conflict," Pichai told reporters after a meeting with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, also head of the National Petroleum Authority.

"We want to see this proceed with success because it's for energy security for both countries ... for another 40 or 50 years," he said.

But he accepted it would be some time before oil and gas could be produced in the OCA, which covers 27,000 sq km (16,000 sq miles). "There are a lot of processes and it could be eight to 10 years before a single drop of oil and gas comes."

The two countries had come close to an agreement but that was derailed when former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra was overthrown by the military in 2006. However, since his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, became prime minister in August, diplomatic ties have warmed significantly.

Chevron Corp and Total have exploration rights to Block A in the disputed stretch of the Gulf, which Thailand and Cambodia have both claimed sovereignty over since the early 1970s.

Three Japanese firms -- Inpex, Marubeni Oil and Gas, a subsidiary of Marubeni Corp, and Mitsui Oil Exploration Co, a unit of trading house Mitsui & Co Ltd -- have expressed interest in the reserves.

Pichai said energy officials from the two countries had discussed plans to work together in areas like gas separation, power generation and chemical production, and Cambodian engineers would be invited to train in Thailand.

Cambodian government spokesman Phay Siphan said the two countries also discussed plans to build a power plant in Koh Kong province bordering Thailand, which would purchase most of the electricity.

New GA law requires safety features on golf carts

By DORIE TURNER and KATE BRUMBACK
Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) - Golf cart owners in Georgia will soon have stricter requirements to follow if they plan to drive their carts on roadways.

A new law taking effect Jan. 1 creates a separate classification of personal transportation vehicles for golf carts. It also sets standards for towns and counties wanting to create ordinances allowing drivers to use the carts on residential streets and multi-purpose pathways. The law requires that golf carts have braking systems, a reverse warning device, tail lamps, a horn and hip restraints.

The bill was signed into law by Gov. Nathan Deal this year after his predecessor, Gov. Sonny Perdue, vetoed a similar measure last year. It had backing from 1 of Georgia's key industries - golf cart manufacturing.

Sport: Glasgow Warriors coach Sean Lineen has mixed emotions after Murrayfield draw

Warriors' Al Kellock goes over for a try as Glasgow stage a spirited fightback at Murrayfield

SEAN LINEEN cut a frustrated figure despite watching his Glasgow Warriors side fight back from 10 points behind to snatch a draw in a dramatic Murrayfield clash.

Glasgow lost the services of Rory Lamont who was taken to hospital for a precautionary scan after a head knock in only his second run-out since rejoining the Warriors.

Edinburgh then surged into a 23-13 lead after 55 minutes, courtesy of Tim Visser's try double, a Ross Rennie try and eight points from Greig Laidlaw's boot.

But Warriors replacement Ruaridh Jackson claimed Glasgow's third try three minutes from time to level the scores.

Scotland fly-half Jackson was denied further heroics as he missed the subsequent conversion and a last-minute penalty in blustery winds, but the Warriors' unbeaten league run was extended to seven matches.

Alastair Kellock and Colin Shaw also scored tries for Glasgow, with Duncan Weir kicking eight points.

Lineen was frustrated with the opening exchanges of either half and at missing the opportunity to claim victory.

He said: "First half wasn't great. Again. We didn't start well, our discipline was poor and we hung off them in defence.

"At times it wasn't pretty but we scrambled and hung in there.

"At the beginning of the second half the momentum was with Edinburgh.

"We dug back and we could've won the game at the end there. We didn't."

Prolific Dutch winger Visser, who will qualify for Scotland in June, scored twice in three second half minutes, both scores being awarded after close inspection from the television match official.

Lineen was reluctant to criticise the decisions, particularly the first which appeared marginal.

Lineen added: "Visser did a lot of the hard work and we could've stopped it a lot earlier. That's our fault.

"At least one of them it appeared he had dropped the ball over the line - he actually said that to one of our players.

"The lad's very difficult to tackle and he was outstanding in his running so we should've stopped him a lot earlier than the try line."

Edinburgh head coach Michael Bradley was upbeat despite the draw, with the teams set to meet at Firhill on New Year's Day.

"Glasgow are nine points ahead of us in this league and deservedly so," he said.

"They weren't going to give up easily. A couple of things went our way at the start of the second half and then they did what they do, which is kept the pressure on us, and we weren't able to close out the game.

"The two tries we got in the second half were exceptional work by the boys and for Tim to get the call on the TMO was great.

"Glasgow, as we knew, came back at us and we just weren't able to control the last 20 minutes. They were very dominant in the last 20 minutes and kept us under pressure.

"With a couple of minutes to go it was looking difficult for us and they had two kicks to win it.

"From 20 minutes out I was delighted with a potential win and with two minutes to go I was happy enough to get a draw."

China: Rotten feed behind toxin in milk (AP)

BEIJING ? Mildewed feed given to cows caused the high levels of a cancer-causing toxin found in milk from China's biggest dairy company and a smaller one, according to a government safety agency investigating the troubled dairy industry's latest scandal.

An expert review identified the mildewed feed as the cause of the excessive levels of aflatoxin in milk from industry giant Mengniu Dairy Group and the Fujian Changfu Dairy Industry Group, the quality supervision and inspection agency said in a statement posted on its website late Monday.

The agency ordered the dairies to destroy the tainted products, and it advised the public that the contamination will end once the cows stop eating the rotten feed.

Aflatoxin is produced by a fungus that commonly grows on grain and legume crops such as peanuts, soybeans, corn and wheat. The toxin turns up in the milk of animals that eat affected crops.

Though at low doses it is not considered harmful to humans, high doses are linked to cancer, especially in the liver.

Both Mengniu and Changfu have issued public apologies. Mengniu said that the tainted products were produced at a subsidiary in Sichuan province and none had entered the market. Changfu said it recalled the affected products immediately after inspectors told the company.

While once a rarity in the Chinese diet, dairy has become a staple as incomes have risen, and the industry's booming growth has been accompanied by persistent quality issues. In the worst scandal, at least six infants died and 300,000 children were sickened in 2008 from drinking infant formula and milk products made with melamine, an industrial chemical that was being added to watered-down milk to elevate protein levels in quality tests.

'Star Wars: The Old Republic' Is Off to a Very Good Start (Mashable)

Star Wars: The Old Republic, the latest MMORPG from BioWare and Electronic Arts, already has a million registered users, and momentum seems to be picking up a week after the game's launch. The "Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game" reached 1 million users Dec. 23, just three days after launch, and it includes users who have pre-ordered the game. Now, however, Electronic Arts has published a new set of milestones, which tell us more about how users are actually interacting with the game.

[More from Mashable: The 10 Best Android Games of 2011]

According to EA, the gamers have spent more than 60 million hours playing the game, completed 260 million quests and killed more than 3 billion non-player characters.

While EA's announcement refers to the SWTOR community as "rabid," we'd wait a little longer before declaring the game a success. We've seen similar early success from MMO titles such as Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, only to see interest wane after a couple of months.

[More from Mashable: Facebook Status Update Saves Woman, Child in Hostage Situation]

Still, if these early numbers are any indication, the ubiquitous World of Warcraft MMORPG might have some decent competition next year.

The Gaming Gifts I Gave This Holiday Season

The Gaming Gifts I Gave This Holiday Season As a gamer that regularly reviews big titles and otherwise has the means to procure his own video game entertainment, it isn't often I get to experience the joy of a thoughtful video game related gift. Instead, I give things to my family and live vicariously through them. What did they get this year?

Perhaps the better question is why the hell is the top image of this article the abysmal failure that was Power Gig: Rise of the Six String? Who could have possibly slighted me so terribly that I would spend a large chunk of money for such a horrible thing? For that matter, what retailer allowed me to purchase this monstrosity?

The answer, quite simply, is Power Gig recently dropped to $15 at my local game store, and I couldn't resist. My older brother, an avid guitar player and fan of all things that mix guitar playing and video games was the recipient of the present, which he later heralded as "completely unplayable". That's high praise coming from someone that once bought me a washboard tie for Christmas.

I also gave him four pounds of coffee and a Jinx t-shirt. I'm not completely cruel. Just look at my nephews.

The Gaming Gifts I Gave This Holiday SeasonYou all know what this is, and so does my nephew Xavier. He's the proud owner of the Skyrim collector's edition now, keeping the massive dragon statue atop the piano at my mother's house with her other collectibles, something that amuses me to no end.

Xavier was also the proud recipient of a Diablo III headset someone handed to me during BlizzCon. Go gift recycling! His father apparently got him the World of Warcraft headset from Creative for Christmas, which made my gift even sweeter.

The Gaming Gifts I Gave This Holiday SeasonAnother nephew, Mattie, found himself the proud new owner of a Mega Bloks Need for Speed Porsche GT3 RS, or as I like to refer to it, 630 pieces' worth of sit down and shut up. This is not something the boy often does. In fact, it's more likely he will end up eating the entire thing, box and all, and then tumble about the room bragging about it than it is he will put it together. Who knows, maybe I just created the world's next whoever it is that drives Porsches really fast guy. I'm sure he has a name.

The Gaming Gifts I Gave This Holiday SeasonMy grand-nephew (is that a thing?) and my niece didn't show up for Christmas dinner at my parents' house, so I didn't get to see the look on Caleb's face when he opened up a brand-new copy of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure for his Wii. I gave him the game itself, two figures, and wrapped up two more figures for his sorta older brother so the two could play together. I am hoping they were overjoyed and excited, but I will never know because Caleb's mom is an uncaring jerk.

Oh come on, she's a lovely person. I never once felt she was really an uncaring jerk, except for that split-second after being told she wouldn't be there. Uncaring jerk.

It's better to give than receive they say, and this Christmas the saying proved true, as no one gave me anything that felt as good as what I gave them. I win the holidays again.

How about you? What gaming gifts did you share with your family and friends this holiday season?

Visualized: IBM's 1956 HDD packs 5MB of storage, requires forklift for installation

Check out IBM's 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) hard disk and those gripes about dragging around that USB thumb drive soon evaporate. This 1956 HDD was composed of 50 24-inch discs, stacked together and taking up 16 sq ft of real estate. The once-cutting-edge monstrosity was capable of commanding an annual fee of $35,000 and stored up to 5MB of data. Sure, by modern standards it's a pretty modest capacity, but the RAMAC still weighed in at just shy of a ton. Our technological forefathers could have done with that exoskeleton prototype.

Top 25 Matches of 2011

They say there are no atheists in foxholes. Same goes for the Elimination Chamber. Dubbed The Devil?s Playground for good reason, the satanic structure houses six Superstars inside ten tons of twisted metal, jagged steel and bulletproof glass. But, like any great battlefield, the chamber has become a place of glory that serves as a testament to the cunning or power of the Superstar who survives it. For John Cena, it has been such a place on three occasions, including this February 20 war against Sheamus, CM Punk, Randy Orton, John Morrison and R-Truth. Determined to earn a WWE Championship Match at WrestleMania, the Cenation leader persevered before finally eliminating Punk to earn his showdown with The Miz on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

Hay Fever Symptoms Worse in Spring Than Summer: Study (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Dec. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Hay fever symptoms -- itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and runny nose -- are worse in the spring than summer even when pollen counts are the same, according to a new report.

In the study, researchers compared daily pollen counts during the 2007 and 2008 hay fever seasons with daily symptoms reported by hay fever sufferers living around Leiden in the Netherlands.

The study participants were also tested for other common allergies, including birch pollen, house dust mites, dogs and cats.

The investigators found that hay fever symptoms matched the concentration of pollen in the air and also the amount of medication taken by the participants. They took more medication on days with high pollen counts and severe hay fever symptoms and less medication on days with low pollen counts and milder hay fever symptoms.

But hay fever symptoms were reportedly worse during the spring than summer for a similar pollen count, according to the study published online Dec. 21 in the journal Clinical and Translational Allergy. This finding could not be explained by medication use or other allergies.

"It is possible that sufferers report their symptoms as milder later in the season because they get used to their hay fever, or that the pollen from late-flowering species is less allergenic than pollen from early-flowering grass," study leader Dr. Letty de Weger, of Leiden University Medical Center, said in a journal news release.

"However, there has been other work which suggests that high exposure to grass pollen early in the season may down-regulate inflammation on subsequent contact possibly via the production of allergen-specific regulatory T cells," de Weger added.

Mourning Syrians rally for Assad, U.N. condemns bombs (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Funerals for 44 people killed in twin suicide car bombs in Damascus turned into a show of support for President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday, with thousands of mourners denouncing the United States and its Arab allies for interfering in Syria.

The United Nations voiced grave concern over the bombings, which marked an ominous step up in the violence that has rocked the Arab nation for nine months, claiming at least 5,000 lives.

Syria said al Qaeda terrorists were behind the attacks. The media displayed gruesome pictures of dismembered bodies and heads. There has been no claim of responsibility.

Opposition members said they suspected the Assad government carried out the bombings itself, to prove to the world it is facing a ruthless insurgency by armed Islamic fundamentalists.

In Cairo, Sudanese General Mohammed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi said he would go to Damascus on Saturday as head of an Arab League monitoring mission which intends to fan out over Syria to verify compliance with an Arab peace plan.

The first batch of about 50 monitors is expected to reach Syria on Monday. Assad's foes say the mission will only be used to gain time while security forces try to smother the revolt.

"I am optimistic that the mission of the monitors will be successful and that events such as yesterday's blasts in Damascus will not affect the mission," Dabi told reporters.

The official Syrian news agency SANA reported that seven army and police "martyrs' killed in clashes with insurgents had been buried on Saturday. The government says 2,000 members of the security forces have been killed in the unrest since March.

"OUR BLOOD FOR BASHAR"

Thousands of Syrians chanted "Death to America" during the funeral processions in Damascus, cheering Assad, calling for revenge and denouncing Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani who has become one of Assad's main Arab critics.

The crowd, carrying posters of Assad and Syrian flags, chanted "We want your head, Hamad" and "We sacrifice our souls and blood for you Bashar" and "God, Syria and Bashar only."

The coffins, draped in Syrian flags, were lined up inside the gilded 8th century Umayyad Mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites, in scenes shown on state TV. Many were marked "unknown."

Leading Sunni Muslim cleric Said al-Bouti said he hoped the attacks would lift "the veils on the eyes of the Arab League ... so that they see who is the murderer and who is the victim."

Al Qaeda are Sunni Muslim militants. Assad and Syria's power elite belong to the Alawite branch of Shi'ite Islam while most Syrians, including protesters and insurgents, are Sunnis.

Hamas, a Sunni Islamist Palestinian militant group that rules the Gaza Strip, condemned the bombings and called for a "quick" political solution to end the bloodshed in Syria.

Hamas has its headquarters in Damascus, but diplomats say dozens of its operatives have quietly returned to Gaza from Damascus as the group scaled back its presence in Syria and gauged the uncertain future of Assad. Hamas denies such reports.

The U.N. Security Council condemned the attacks.

"Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and ... any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable," it said in a statement.

Western powers say the security forces have perpetrated most of the violence in Syria. But Russia, an old ally of Damascus, wants any U.N. resolution on the crisis to be even-handed.

"If the requirement is that we drop all reference to violence coming from extreme opposition, that's not going to happen," U.N. ambassador Vitaly Churkin said in New York after Russia submitted a revised draft resolution to the council.

"If they expect us to have an arms embargo, that's not going to happen," he said. The experience of Libya showed it would be one-sided and used against the government, Churkin said.

Assad has used tanks and troops to try to crush mainly peaceful street protests inspired by other Arab uprisings this year. Armed insurgents and army deserters are now fighting back.

"A NEW PHASE"

Syria has generally barred foreign media from the country, making it hard to verify accounts of events from either side.

But Friday's blasts signaled a dramatic escalation.

"It's a new phase. We're getting militarized here," said Joshua Landis, a Syria expert at the University of Oklahoma. He said the bombs were a "small premonition" of what may come in a country that some analysts see slipping towards civil war.

"This is when the Syrian opposition is beginning to realize they are on their own," he added, referring to Western reluctance to intervene militarily in Syria.

A Syrian Interior Ministry spokesman said 166 people were wounded by the Damascus explosions, which blew human limbs into the streets. It broadcast footage of mangled bodies being carried in blankets and on stretchers into ambulances, a row of corpses wrapped in sheets lying in the street.

The Arab League peace plan stipulates a withdrawal of troops from protest-hit cities and towns, release of prisoners and dialogue with the opposition. Opponents of Assad have ruled out any negotiations until the violence against protesters stops.

Damascus says more than 1,000 prisoners have been freed since the Arab plan was agreed and the army has left cities.

Anti-Assad activists say no such pullout has occurred.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 15 civilians were killed by security forces outside the capital on Friday, eight of them in Homs, a bastion of the revolt.

Florida trip brightened Noah's outlook

Joakim Noah went home after that awful spring night at the United Center.

He had watched the Heat outscore the Bulls 18-3 in the final three-plus minutes of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals. "Watched" being the operative word.

Noah didn't play a second of the fourth quarter.

Feeling empty, angry and "almost depressed," according to his college coach, Florida's Billy Donovan, Noah took off for New York, hoping his native Manhattan could provide a little anonymity.

No chance.

"That series was seen worldwide, and everybody had an opinion about it," Noah recalled. "It got to the point where people would ask me about it 30-40 times a day. It was hard to escape."

Noah said he envisioned "sitting on a stoop and just chilling. Just walking down the streets, being with friends. Going to a restaurant, a club, whatever a 25-year-old does."

But wherever he went, an impromptu news conference broke out.

They fired questions and comments like this: Why didn't you play in the fourth? What was Thibs (coach Tom Thibodeau) thinking? What happened? I wish you all would have beaten the Heat. (Expletive) LeBron.

"All that stuff," Noah said.

Some R&R in Hawaii helped rejuvenate Noah. He worked out with Derrick Rose in Los Angeles and played for the French National team. He also rehabbed and rested the right ankle that bugged him for the final two months of the season.

But Noah didn't really find peace until he returned to his adopted home, Gainesville, Fla., for a few weeks in the fall.

"It reminds me of my childhood, the nostalgic feeling of going back to your college campus," he said. "Those were the best times in my life. To be around all these hungry kids who are trying to become professional athletes, it's a good feeling."

But mostly, Noah wanted to be around Donovan, the man he calls "Coach D."

"He has that sickness ? he hates to lose and is probably the most competitive guy I've been around, very similar to Thibs. He's also very religious and an unbelievable family man. We might not have similar beliefs or views politically (Donovan leans right), but he's someone I see as another father figure."

Noah would hit the gym at around 10:30 a.m. for a demanding individual workout with Donovan or a member of his staff. Then he would lift weights, often watch practice and return to the gym for countless reps with "The Tornado" ? his side-spinning jumper.

"I tried to tweak it once and made it worse," Donovan said. "You can talk about his form not being picture-perfect, but Jo has two things going for him: He has a very good eye and is relentless in trying to work on it."

Donovan drilled Noah on 15-foot jumpers. If he can hit them in games, teams will have to think twice about double-teaming Rose.

"He said, 'I'm with best player in the league in Derrick Rose; how can I help?'" Donovan said. "He is all about the team. It's never: I want to expand my game and score more."

(AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

(AP) ? The New England Patriots emphasize playing well for 60 minutes every game. On Saturday, 30 was enough ? barely.

Rallying from their worst half of the season, the Patriots scored on their next five possessions and clinched a playoff bye with a 27-24 win over the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.

"You don't want to, certainly, make a habit of this," said Tom Brady, who scored on two 1-yard sneaks and threw for a 1-yard touchdown. "We showed some resiliency."

New England (12-3) won its seventh straight game. After the Houston Texans lost to the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night, the Patriots needed a win or a tie to lock up one of the top two spots in the AFC.

"It's good to clinch," said Deion Branch, who caught the touchdown pass from Brady, "but not by the way we played. It's not the way you want to do it."

Miami (5-10) lost for the third time in eight games after opening at 0-7 and is 1-1 under Todd Bowles, who took over when Tony Sparano was fired.

"First half we came out and played our tempo and our ballgame," Bowles said. "The second half they made us play theirs."

The AFC East champions trailed 17-0 at halftime but made the necessary adjustments and went to their no-huddle offense more, keeping the Dolphins from making defensive substitutions. And Brady was on target after a first half in which heavy defensive pressure against a makeshift offensive line affected his accuracy. He completed just 7 of 19 passes for 87 yards and was sacked three times in the half.

But in the second half, he completed 20 of 27 passes for 217 yards, finishing at 27 for 46 for 304 yards and leading one scoring drive after another ? a 45-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski, the scoring pass to Branch, his own sneak that tied the game, Gostkowski's 42-yard go-ahead kick after Devin McCourty's first interception of the year, and the other sneak with 2:56 to go, making it 27-17.

The Dolphins made it closer on Matt Moore's 15-yard scoring pass to Davone Bess with 1:48 to play. They had three timeouts left, but their hopes faded when Brady hit Wes Welker for a 6-yard gain and a first down.

"We had (Brady's) number in the first half, but in the second half he came out and made a lot of plays," Miami linebacker Karlos Dansby said. "He is a coach on the field."

The Dolphins seemed headed for a victory and got a break even before the game started when Patriots left tackle Matt Light hurt his ankle in warmups and didn't play. Left guard Logan Mankins took his spot, but he left with a knee injury suffered on New England's second series.

"There's always things that are going to go wrong in a football game and things aren't going to work out the way you want them to all the time," said Welker, who finished with 12 catches for 138 yards after managing just two for 20 in the first half. "The main thing is just playing a full 60 minutes and never giving in and understanding that one drive and one score (can) get things going."

The Patriots punted on their first six series of the first half then missed a field goal on the other. The Dolphins struggled in the second half when Moore fumbled the snap at his 38-yard line and Vince Wilfork recovered, starting the drive capped by Branch's touchdown.

"They committed penalties in the first half," Dolphins guard Richie Incognito said. "We turned the ball over and committed penalties in the second half. That is never a good recipe."

Reggie Bush had another outstanding game for Miami with his fourth straight rushing day of at least 100 yards. He finished with 113 on 22 carries one week after gaining a career-high 203 yards.

His latest performance gave him 1,086 yards rushing for the season, the first time in his six years, the first five with the New Orleans Saints, that he passed 1,000.

"It really doesn't mean anything right now," he said. "This one's pretty tough."

The Dolphins had taken a 3-0 lead on Dan Carpenter's 47-yard field goal 4:01 into the game and made it 10-0 with 1:15 gone in the second quarter on Moore's 19-yard pass to Brandon Marshall.

They stretched that to 17-0, the Patriots biggest deficit of the season, on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Moore to Charles Clay. The 89-yard drive was helped by two defensive pass interference penalties on third down.

But the Patriots remained calm in the locker room at intermission.

"There wasn't a bunch of yelling," Wilfork said. "We just came in and said we've got to play better, we've got to make more plays."

They did. The Dolphins didn't.

"Our guys fought," Bowles said, "but we didn't finish."

Notes: Welker set a franchise record for one season with 1,518 yards receiving. He broke the mark of 1,493 set by Randy Moss in 2007. ... Bush was checked my medical personnel on the sideline late in the game "Something in my leg just didn't feel right," he said. "I'm walking. If it was serious, I wouldn't be walking." ... Moore completed 17 of 33 passes for 294 yards, his highest total as a Dolphin. He threw for more than that with the Carolina Panthers once in 2009 and once in 2010. ... The victory was the largest comeback by the Patriots from a second-half deficit since Nov. 10, 2002 when they beat the Chicago Bears 33-30 after trailing 27-6 in the third quarter.
