Military projects and nanotechnology push boundaries of flexible electronics in imaging technologies

Posted: Dec 29th, 2012 (Nanowerk News) Aiming to address the strategic military need for accurate, high-resolution imaging, a University of Wisconsin-Madison electrical and computer engineer working with the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the U.S. Department of Defense has a simple goal: to make night vision more accurate and easier for soldiers and pilots to use. Professor Jack Ma
Jack Ma
Through some key breakthroughs in flexible semiconductors, electrical and computer engineering Professor Zhenqiang "Jack" Ma has created two imaging technologies that have potential applications beyond the 21st century battlefield.

With $750,000 in support from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Ma has developed curved night-vision goggles using germanium nanomembranes.

Creating night-vision goggles with a curved surface allows a wider field of view for pilots, but requires highly photosensitive materials with mechanical bendability-the silicon used in conventional image sensors doesn't cut it.

Instead, Ma's design employs flexible germanium nanomembranes: a transferrable flexible semiconductor that until now has been too challenging to use in imagers due to a high dark current, the background electrical current that flows through photosensitive materials even when they aren't exposed to light.

"Because of their higher dark current, the image often comes up much noisier on germanium-based imagers," says Ma. "We solved that problem." Ma's dark current reduction technology has also been recently licensed to Intel. In another imaging project, the U.S. Department of Defense has provided Ma with $750,000 in support of development of imagers for military surveillance that span multiple spectra, combining infrared and visible light into a single image. "The reason they are interested in IR is because visible light can be blocked by clouds, dust, smoke," says Ma. "IR can go through, so simultaneous visible and IR imaging allows them to see everything." Inexpensive silicon makes production of visible light imagers a simple task, but IR relies on materials incompatible with silicon. The current approach involves a sensor for IR images and a sensor for visible light, combining the two images in post-processing, which requires greater computing power and hardware complexity. Instead, Ma will employ a heterogeneous semiconductor nanomembrane, stacking the two incompatible materials in each pixel of the new imager to layer IR and visible images on top of one another in a single image. The result will be imagers that can seamlessly shift between IR and visible images, allowing the picture to be richer and more quickly utilized for strategic decisionmaking. "They are looking for the highest resolution they can get," says Ma. "Something that can take one picture with everything in it."

Generally, most of the organizations running their business online will be looking for ways to improve their sales on the World Wide Web. If you are also looking for the same, you can opt for one of the effective and popular methods of marketing called as email marketing. The first step in this proess is to prepare a list of email IDs to which your marketing content need to be sent. This initially process might take some time since you will have to find the list of intended audiences to whom the message should be sent. This list can be prepared by attracting people to participate in a raffle prize or for subscribing to your newsletter, etc... All that they have to do is to provide their mail ID in the process of subscribing to your newsletter through your website. When this type of opportunity is given the list of mail IDs in your database will continue to grow on a daily basis.

Email marketing is a great way to reach prospective customers and above all this method is widely followed by business organizations due to its affordability. With the help of a single message a number of people can be reached and there are companies that can offer email marketing service to business organizations in such a way that they can effectively manage their advertising campaign.

These service providers will have software program in place so that the messages can be easily managed. Most of these firms will have attractive templates so that messages can be attractively created and they will also be offering the ability to track the success of the advertising efforts of their customers. You will have to simply enter your mail list and the software provided by them will return information with respect to the number of mails that were forwarded, the numbers that were sent to wrong addresses, etc...
Even though this method of advertising is effective, it can turn good results only when the messages are crafted in a good manner so that potential customers can be attracted towards your product or service as against the product or service that is already been used by them currently. It is better to ensure that the message created should be clear and concise since the recipient might not be in a position to read the long letter sent to them due to their busy schedule. These techniques of creating attractive letters are well known for companies offering email marketing service. So, it is better to get their help in this respect.

Money Talking: Trends in Philanthropic Giving - WNYC

Philanthropic giving tends to peak in December as big and small donors alike squeeze their donations in before the end-of-year tax deadline.?

This week, WNYC's Money Talking takes a look at trends in philanthropy with regular contributor Rana Foroohar of Time magazine and Susan Wolf Ditkoff, a partner at The Bridgespan Group, a firm that advises nonprofits, organizations and philanthropists.?

They examine what happens when business metrics are applied to the nonprofit world and whether charities are influenced by big donors.?

Foroohar and Wolf Ditkoff also weigh in on what happens if the charitable deduction is capped or eliminated as lawmakers hammer out a deal on the fiscal cliff.

Plus, with just a few days left before the new year, Money Talking examines what individuals looking to donate $1, $100 or $1000 should think about as they make their last minute gifts.?

What worked for me is just turning off Google Now. Yeah you lose some functionality, but it doubles your battery life. Google really screwed up with this one. I really don't know who to blame, Google, Samsung, or Verizon. I dont get these wakelocks on my Nexus with the same app, so it might be something to do with what Samsung did with TW. No wakelocks on 4.2 either.

Make sure to hit the button if I helped you out!

Did Shakira give birth to a baby boy?

Scott Heavey / Getty Images

Shakira and Gerard Pique.

Based on his recent Twitter feed, FC Barcelona soccer star Gerard Pique has become a dad -- which means his girlfriend, singer and "Voice" mentor Shakira has become a mom.?

But not so fast. Eagle-eyed fans will note that he made his announcement on Dec. 27 -- and Dec. 28 is a day reserved in some countries (such as Spain and Latin America) for jokes and pranks, like April Fool's Day.

Check out the two posts Pique made:

?

Initially the first tweet caused waves of interest from news outlets, but when Shakira herself failed to also tweet the good news -- and Pique went silent for the next 11 hours with no follow up -- it appeared that the news might be a bit premature. His most recent post, actually noting the "prank" day, seems to confirm that he was just joking.

Still, a baby is definitely on the way; the couple, who met while?Shakira was filming a video for the South Africa World Cup, announced via Facebook in September that they were expecting a child.

"Gerard and I are very happy awaiting the arrival of our first baby," said the 35-year-old singer and new mentor on "The Voice." "At this time, we have decided to give priority to this unique moment in our lives and postpone all the promotional activities planned over the next few days."

Looks like they'll have to extend those postponements a little longer.

Oregon State, Texas going opposite directions - Sat, 29 Dec 2012 PST

Oregon State generated the biggest one-year turnaround in school history and could secure its third 10-win season by beating Texas in the Alamo Bowl today in San?Antonio.

The Longhorns? They are trying to reverse a three-year slide from the days when 10 wins were just a footnote on the way to BCS?bowls.

Beating the 15th-ranked Beavers tonight would be another baby step back to the elite for Mack Brown and company, with still a long way to go. Texas followed a loss to Alabama in the 2009 BCS championship game with a shocking 5-7 record ? the only losing season in 15 under Brown ? and an 8-5 mark last year that included a Holiday Bowl win over?Cal.

Lose to Oregon State, and the Longhorns (8-4) will have a second straight eight-win season and a long offseason to think about a three-game losing streak,?too.

?I think that at Texas we want to be 13-0,? Brown said. ?The standards are higher than eight, and that?s what the kids need to understand and our coaches do understand. And we are ready to take that next step and get it back to where it should?be.?

Mike Riley has had to do a little rebuilding of his own after leading the Beavers (9-3) to 10 wins in 2006 and three more winning seasons after that. Oregon State matched Texas at 5-7 in 2010, then slipped to 3-9 a season?ago.

The Beavers are six games better in 2012, beating one Rose Bowl team ? Wisconsin ? in their opener and almost beating the other ? Stanford ? on the?road.

Source: Longhorns suspend McCoy,?Hicks

A person with knowledge of the suspensions tells the Associated Press that Texas has sent home backup quarterback Case McCoy and injured linebacker Jordan Hicks from the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio for violating team?rules.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the school wasn?t releasing the names of the suspended players. The person said the players broke?curfew.

Brown addressed the situation during a news conference Friday and referred to a KENS-TV report that police were investigating two unidentified Texas players in an alleged sexual assault at a San Antonio?hotel.

Amazon most satisfying website to shop: survey

(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc remained the best website for shopping online while JC Penney Co Inc suffered the largest drop in customer satisfaction of any major online retailer this holiday season, according to a survey released on Thursday.

Flash sale sites Gilt.com and RueLaLa.com were among the worst performers in online shopping satisfaction this season, according to ForeSee's Holiday E-Retail Satisfaction Index.

"The importance of satisfying them and giving a great consumer experience is going to pay back huge dividends in terms of profitability for these retailers," said Larry Freed, president and chief executive officer of ForeSee, which measures customer satisfaction for companies, including retailers.

Amazon has held the highest score in each of the eight years of the index, due in part to the wide variety of merchandise it offers and a site that is easy to use.

"They've really done a great job in setting the standard for everybody else," Freed said of Amazon.

Amazon's score was again 88 out of 100, while Gilt.com and Fingerhut.com shared the lowest score of 72. LLBean.com had the second-highest ranking, 85, up 4 points from a year earlier.

A score of 80 or higher is considered strong, Freed said.

JC Penney's score fell to 78 from 83.

"They've struggled a lot in their stores as they've tried to reinvent themselves a bit and that's carried over a little bit to the website," Freed said.

Other retailers that saw their ForeSee satisfaction scores drop included Apple Inc - down to 80 from 83 - and Dell Inc, which fell to 77 from 80.

At Apple, as the popular tech company has brought out more products, navigating the site has become more of an issue, said Freed. Improving the functionality of the site would give it the biggest boost, he said.

No. 1 U.S. retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc, which is trying to grow its online sales, scored a 78 for its Walmart.com website, down from 79 in 2011. Rival Target Corp's website scored 79, up from 76 last year, when it had some struggles after taking over control of the site from Amazon.

As for those flash sale sites coming in at the low end of the scores, Freed noted that some are trying to grow beyond the premise of flash sales, which offer a limited amount of marked down merchandise at specific times.

"It works for some kinds of consumers, it's not going to work for every kind of consumer," said Freed. "Their models today are going to work and they're going to have a chance to be successful, but at the end of the day it's not the right answer for everybody."

ForeSee's 2012 report was based on more than 24,000 surveys collected from visitors to websites of the 100 largest online retailers from Thanksgiving to Christmas, up from 40 retail sites in prior years.

Man pushed to death on NYC subway tracks

By Shimon Prokupecz and Gus Rosendale, NBCNewYork.com

A man was pushed from a subway platform in Queens Thursday and killed by an oncoming train, a law enforcement official told NBC 4 New York.

Witnesses told police that a woman, described as heavyset and in her 20s, shoved the man onto the 7-train tracks at 40th Street and Queens Blvd. before fleeing, the law enforcement official said. Police are searching for the woman.

Police say they believe they have video of the suspect that they're currently retrieving from a pizzeria near the train station. The video was expected to be released overnight.

The suspect, dressed in a gray, white and blue jacket, had been mumbling to herself and pacing the platform, according to police. Witnesses said that the victim and suspect did not exchange any words and that it appeared that the man did notice the suspect at all before being pushed from behind to his death.

"I heard it. One of my customers was on train and heard it going over body," said Jiovanni Briones, who works near the scene.

It is the second time this month that a person has been shoved onto subway train tracks and killed.

Naeem Davis, a 30-year-old deli worker, was recently arrested and charged with second-degree murder for allegedly pushing a man off a Midtown subway platform to his death.

Ki-Suk Han, 58, was stuck by a southbound Q train after being pushed off the platform at the 49th Street station Dec. 3.

Mayo Scientists Link Enzyme to Aggressive Prostate Cancer

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic have directly linked an enzyme to aggressive prostate cancer. They've also developed a compound that restricts the ability of the molecule to fuel metastases of this type of cancer.

The team from Mayo's Florida campus identified the first direct relationship between the enzyme known as PRSS3 to prostate cancer, according to Medical News Today. They published their results in Molecular Cancer Research.

The National Cancer Institute estimated that close to a quarter of a million men would be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2012, and around 28,000 of them wouldn't survive.

For years, medical professionals have relied on two types of screening for this disease: a digital rectal exam and the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test. However, the Mayo Clinic says using the PSA test is sometimes controversial, since it can provide false indicators and since there is no proof that it actually saves lives.

PRSS3, a protease, digests other molecules. The Mayo researchers concluded that activity associated with the enzyme alters the environment surrounding prostate cancer cells. They suspect that PRSS3 frees the cells from surrounding tissue, allowing them to become invasive and to spread cancer.

They haven't concluded that the enzyme is the only issue linked to aggressive prostate cancer, however. Instead, they suspect that PRSS3 might power a potentially lethal form of this cancer.

The researchers examined databases available to the public that contained information from clinical studies. After finding a link between early breast cancer and protease in earlier work, they sought to discover whether any other type of cancer expressed protease and at which stages of the disease.

They found a dramatic relationship between increases in PRSS3 expression and progression of aggressive prostate cancer. The scientists determined that protease expression played a critical role in prostate cancer metastasis in mice models and found a site for an inhibiting agent to shut down the expression. In mice in which PRSS3 was "shut off," the malignancy did not spread.

One outcome of the study is the possibility of testing prostate cancer patients for the molecule. Doctors could better determine patients at highest risk for an aggressive form of the disease. While the inhibitor utilized cannot be directly developed into a useful drug, it could provide a template for creating one.

My husband is among those who could eventually profit from this study. After two successive PSA tests with numbers that suddenly skyrocketed, he underwent painful biopsies that showed nothing amiss. Although his PSA numbers bounce, his urologist insists that he keep repeating the test.

With a family history of aggressive prostate cancer, my husband finds it hard to argue. Should he nix more PSA tests and eventually develop the illness, the link between the enzyme and prostate cancer provides some hope of a positive outcome.

Vonda J. Sines has published thousands of print and online health and medical articles. She specializes in diseases and other conditions that affect the quality of life.

2012?s Top 10 cars at auction | Hemmings Blog: Classic and ...

Overall

With no more auctions scheduled for 2012, we?re safe in looking at the top 10 sales of cars at public auction from 2012. I understand that talking about extremely expensive cars will always generate extreme controversy among the Hemmings audience. Personally, I am less and less upset about the notion. As I wrote in the December Sports & Exotic Car,

We subscribe to an unpopular theory that we?re still in the early stages of a broad increase in values that will make the Eighties collector car inflation look like trading in pogs. This time, though, it?s not a bubble, but a very real and permanent acceptance of collector cars as part of a package of assets for the wealthy, along with real estate and other collectibles. Sure, there may be short term inflation, particularly in specific marques, but value trends over the last decade are rising consistently and broadly across the board.

We?re not alone; witness the rise of collector car indices and hundred million dollar investment funds. Today each car over $10 million is still reported breathlessly, and we include ourselves among those who find it outrageous. But there are bottles of wine selling for a quarter-million dollars and you can only use those once, if they?re even still good when you open them. A car gets less valuable if you don?t use it. The average of the top 10 most expensive paintings sold is $197,920,000, with a quarter-billion-dollar C?zanne in the lead. Not to be gauche, but it?s hard for us to say the artistry of a one-off coachbuilt car is less than that of a painter. It?s not the age factor, either: the #2 painting is a 1948 Jackson Pollack. We don?t like Jackson Pollack and the last time we looked, Number 5, 1948, wasn?t even roadworthy.

Instead of getting upset about high prices, think about celebrating the fact that great cars are being more widely recognized as being worth a lot. I?m sorry if you can no longer afford a 250 Testa Rossa, but for the rest of us, what?s happening in the seven-figure market has no bearing on Mazda RX7 and Dodge Dart prices. I?m not shopping for 540Ks any more than I?m shopping for C?zannes. I just hope whoever does buy them does the right thing and lets the rest of us see them. Someone has to buy them ? the cost isn?t an issue; it?s failing to recognize that a great work of art, regardless of medium, belongs to the world. You are not an owner but a caretaker and your primary duty is not to satisfy your own sense of self-importance, but to honor the object.

Three cars sold for more than $10 million at auction this year, although none touched the $16 million that Gooding achieved for a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR in 2011. The top 10 combined for?$85,918,970. Gooding, RM and Bonhams were the only auction houses to make the list, although Artcurial ($5,931,349 for a?1959 Ferrari 250GT LWB California Spyder at?R?tromobile)?and Mecum ($5,830,000,?1972 Porsche 917/10 Spyder in Monterey)?both sold cars for more than $5 million, as well.?Seven of the top 10 sold in Monterey, with two more at Bonhams? extraordinary Goodwood sale; and one at RM in Monaco.

Rather than including lengthy descriptions for each one, I?ve just made some observations on why they brought the money they did, and provided links to the auction catalog entries, although I recognize those won?t last forever. Prices are final values including premium, converted where applicable to dollars at that day?s rate.

#9, $6,600,000: 1957 Ferrari 250 GT California LWB Prototype Spyder, lot 137 at Gooding Monterey, Sunday, August 19, 2012. It?s not a Cal Spyder, it?s the Cal Spyder, the one used in the original brochure.

#8, $6,710,000: 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Coupe, lot 231 at RM Monterey, Sunday, August 19, 2012. Intended as gentlemen?s racer, Ferrari built nine, and it?s Mille Miglia eligible.

1912 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Double Pullman Limousine

#7, $7,342,933: 1912 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Pullman Limousine, lot 272 at Bonhams Goodwood, Friday, June 29, 2012. There are two vehicles known as ?The Corgi,? both for their association with the beloved English line of die-cast models. This was not the Ford Model 8 which launched the Corgi range; instead, as the first Rolls-Royce reproduced as a Corgi, it became synonymous with the Rolls-Royce name for an entire English generation. This is the highest price ever paid for a Rolls-Royce at auction.

1929-31 4½-Litre Supercharged 'Blower' Bentley

#6, $7,867,261: 1929 Bentley 4 1/2 Liter supercharged single seater, lot 204 at Bonhams Goodwood, Friday, June 29, 2012. Amazingly, Bonhams set two worlds? records at this ?22 million auction, the preceding Rolls-Royce; and this Bentley, which became the most expensive English car ever sold at auction. The Birkin Bentley is in substantially original condition, meaning it really is the same car that Sir Henry ?Tim? Birkin drove to more than 135 MPH on the Brooklands outer circuit.

Broadway to honor Jack Klugman and Charles Durning

NEW YORK (AP) ? The theater community will honor Jack Klugman and Charles Durning by dimming Broadway's lights in back-to-back memorials.

The marquees at all Broadway theaters will go dark for one minute at 8 p.m. Thursday in honor of Durning, who died Monday at 89. Durning amassed several important Broadway credits, including playing Big Daddy in a 1990 revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," David Rabe's "Boom Boom Room" and opposite George C. Scott in "Inherit the Wind" in 1996.

On Friday, the 40 Broadway marquees will go dark at 8 p.m. for Klugman, who also died Monday at 90. Klugman earned a Tony Award nomination for "Gypsy" in 1960 and his Broadway roles included parts in "I'm Not Rappaport" and "The Sunshine Boys."

Egypt's leader signs contentious constitution into law

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi has signed into law a new Islamist-drafted constitution he says will help end political turmoil and allow him to focus on fixing the fragile economy.

Anxiety about the deepening economic crisis has gripped Egypt in past weeks, with many people rushing to take out their savings from banks and the government imposing new restrictions to reduce capital flight.

Results announced on Tuesday showed Egyptians had approved the text with an overwhelming 63.8 percent, paving the way for a parliamentary election in about two months.

The win gives Islamists their third straight electoral victory since veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak was toppled in a 2011 revolution, following their earlier wins in parliamentary and presidential elections.

The presidency said Mursi signed a decree enforcing the charter late on Tuesday after the official announcement of the result of a referendum approving the basic law, Egypt's first constitution since Mubarak's overthrow.

The text has sharpened painful divisions in the Arab world's most populous nation and prompted often violent protests on the streets of Cairo.

Opposition groups condemn the new basic law as too Islamist and undemocratic, saying it could allow clerics to intervene in the lawmaking process and leave minority groups without proper legal protection.

But Mursi, catapulted into power by his Islamist allies, believes adopting the text is key to ending a protracted period of turmoil and uncertainty that has wrecked the economy.

He argues the constitution offers enough protection to all groups, saying many Egyptians are fed up with street protests that have prevented a return to normality and distracted the government from focusing on the economy.

An atmosphere of crisis has deepened in Egypt since the vote, with many Egyptians rushing to take out cash from banks and hoarding hard currency savings at home.

Sharpening people's concerns, the authorities imposed currency controls to prevent capital flight. Leaving or entering Egypt with more than $10,000 cash is now banned.

Rocked by often violent protests in the run up to the two-stage referendum this month, Cairo was calm, with only a small group of protesters burning tires overnight.

Mursi's government says its opponents are damaging the economy by prolonging political upheaval. It has pledged to impose unpopular tax increases and spending cuts to win a loan package from the International Monetary Fund.

Adding to the government's long list of worries, Communications Minister Hany Mahmoud resigned from his post citing his "inability to adapt to the government's working culture".

The United States, which provides billions of dollars a year in military and other support for Egypt and sees it as a pillar of security in the Middle East, called on Egyptian politicians to bridge divisions and on all sides to reject violence.

"President Mursi, as the democratically elected leader of Egypt, has a special responsibility to move forward in a way that recognizes the urgent need to bridge divisions," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said.

Stock futures fall as "cliff" talks at standstill

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock index futures declined on Monday, indicating the S&P 500 would extend losses after suffering its worst drop since mid-November on continued worry legislators will be unable to reach a deal to avert the "fiscal cliff."

The benchmark S&P index <.spx> declined 0.9 percent on Friday, its biggest percentage drop since November 14, as a Republican plan to avoid the cliff - $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts that could tip the U.S. economy into recession - failed to gain sufficient support on Thursday night.

Some U.S. lawmakers expressed concern on Sunday the country would go over the cliff, as some Republicans charged that was President Barack Obama's goal. Talks are stalled with Obama and House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner out of Washington for the holidays.

"Despite the selloff on Friday, the market finished the week off on an up note and this morning we are seeing a downside follow through as investors are being rational to the possibility we do not have a cliff deal by year-end," said Andre Bakhos, director of market analytics at Lek Securities in New York.

"Today is a short session and with people away there is a possibility we could see exaggerated moves."

Congress is expected to return to Washington next Thursday as Obama returns from a trip to Hawaii. As the deadline draws closer, a 'stop-gap' deal appears to be the most likely outcome of any talks.

S&P 500 futures fell 4.7 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures lost 34 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures declined 11.5 points.

Trading volumes are expected to be muted, with U.S. equity markets scheduled to close at 1 p.m. (1800 GMT) ahead of the Christmas holiday on Tuesday.

In addition, a number of European markets will operate on a shortened session, with other markets closed entirely.

U.S. retailers may not see a sales surge this weekend as ho-hum discounts and fears about imminent tax hikes and cuts in government spending give Americans fewer reasons to open their wallets in the last few days before Christmas.

Aegerion Pharmaceuticals Inc said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Juxtapid capsules in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Shares lost 1.8 percent to $25.25 in light premarket trade.

European shares were broadly steady, consolidating sharp gains made in the past five weeks, with volumes set to be thin for the traditionally quiet half session ahead of the Christmas break. <.eu/>

Asian shares steadied in quiet pre-holiday trade from a slump late last week, with prices capped by nervousness about the risk of the United States failing to avert a fiscal crisis.

What Is Frankincense?

You've probably heard that Frankincense was one of the three gifts brought to the baby Jesus by the three wise men, according to The Gospel of Matthew. But what the heck is it?

Frankincense is the dried sap of trees in the Boswellia genus, particularly Boswellia sacra. These trees grow in Oman, Yemen and the Horn of Africa, including Somalia and Ethiopia. When dried, the sap is burned as incense and thought to have several medicinal properties. Frankincense producers wound the tree using a traditional chisel-like tool, after which a milky white sap leeches out of the hole, forming "tears." The first sap is not collected, and is thought to cleanse the wood of impurities, according to an Omani tour guide interviewed by the BBC. Once this dries, the hole is enlarged and deepened, after which sap comes out, dries, and is collected about two weeks later. ?

The right stuff

This tapping process is repeated several times at several points throughout the year, depending upon the region. After the stonelike gobs are gathered, they are put out to dry. The highest quality frankincense is silvery and clear, or with a slight green tinge. Brown-yellow frankincense is the most readily available and the cheapest type. In Oman, the best stuff is reserved for the sultan, Qaboos bin Said Al Said, and is hard to get outside the country, according to Slate.

The frankincense-producing lands in Oman are perhaps the best known and most ancient source of the material. It's been traded there for thousands of years, and shipped on boats to the Mediterranean, India and China. The Romans wanted to get into this trade, the BBC reported, sending 10,000 troops to the area in the first century B.C. to conquer and control the commodity's production. But the Romans never got there, driven back by the heat and aridity of the desert. Even today, it takes 11 hours to drive from Oman's capital of Muscat into the cooler, coastal hills in the country's south where B. sacra flourishes. [5 Surprising Facts About Christmas]

According to Businessweek, the frankincense trade became the most lucrative in the world from 1000 B.C. through A.D. 400. For a time, it made southern Arabia the richest place on Earth, Businessweek reports. Herodotus wrote of the frankincense produced in this region, but warned that the trees were guarded by flying serpents.

Woodsy and fruity

Frankincense has a lemony, musky odor. As Jackie Spinner put it in her Slate piece, "I asked a dozen Omanis to tell me straight-up if they liked the smell, which is both woodsy and fruity, and ancient, which can describe a lot of smells, including my grandmother snapping Juicy Fruit gum in front of a campfire. ? Every Omani I pressed professed a great love for the smell." It is burned at Roman Catholic Masses and used in Arabic wedding and birth ceremonies. Asked why it was given to the baby Jesus, one Omani man told Spinner it was given "to ward off evil spirits and snakes." (One wonders about the tolerance of the serpents that allegedly haunted southern Oman's Boswellia groves.)

Frankincense was once much more valuable and sought after, partially due to its supposed health benefits. But modern studies have revived an interest in the material. Some studies suggest Frankincense may have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties.

Unfortunately, Boswellia trees are in decline, due in part to over-tapping of trees to meet increased demand, as well as climate change. One study estimated the number of Boswellia trees could decline by 90 percent in the next 50 years. Another study, published recently in the journal Annals of Botany, hopes to correct that. It's the first time researchers have examined the tree's sap-secreting system, according to study authors, with results suggesting a maximum of nine tapping spots per tree. Due to high demand, up to 27 tapping spots are made per tree in some commercial sites in Ethiopia, according to the study.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f1.8

  • Pros

Very sharp. Minimal distortion. Compact. Fast aperture.

  • Cons Plastic lens barrel. Lens hood not included.
  • Bottom Line

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f1.8 is compact, sharp, and can capture a ton of light?it's a great portrait lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras.

By Jim Fisher

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f1.8 ($399.99 direct) is a fast lens that delivers a classic 90mm-equivalent field of view when used on a Micro Four Thirds camera?a classic focal length for portraiture. From an optical performance standpoint it's a pure gem, although its plastic lens barrel is a step below the all-metal construction of the more expensive Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f1.8 lens, and it doesn't have the weather sealing of the Olympus? M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f2.8 Macro. Still, the lens impressed us enough to earn an Editors' Choice award.

The lens measures just 2.2 by 1.8 inches (HD) and weighs a mere 4.1 ounces. It balances well with both smaller cameras like the PEN series and bodies with a more SLR-like design like the Panasoic Lumix DMC-G5. There's no hood included, although Olympus does sell one for the lens?it costs about $35 and is recommended to help increase image contrast and reduce lens flare. Its focus motor is very quiet, without sacrificing focus speed, a boon to both video and still shooters.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness and distortion characteristics of the lens when paired with the Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5. At f/1.8 it's a little soft in the corners, which leads to a center-weighted resolution score of 1,751 lines per picture height, which is just a smidge shy of the 1,800 lines we use to define a sharp photo. The center at f/1.8 is an impressive 2,387 lines, so you should feel confident in using the lens for shots where your subject is framed towards the center without stopping down. Closing the iris to f/2 brings the center-weighted score to 1,999 lines, and that score increases steadily as you stop down further?peaking at 2,787 lines at f/5.6. Distortion is not an issue?the lens shows only 0.6 percent, which isn't relevant in real-world shooting.

If you're looking for a portrait lens for your Micro Four Thirds camera, you'll be hard pressed to do much better than the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f1.8. It's small, light, fast, and sharp. It feels solid, although the build quality is not up to the standards of more expensive Olympus lenses, and it is a shame that you have to pay extra for a lens hood?an add-on that should be standard issue. The 90mm-equivalent field of view is great for head-and-shoulder shots, although some shooters may prefer the tighter field of view and shallower depth of field that the longer focal length of the $900 M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f1.8 lens is capable of creating. But if this focal length is your cup of tea, don't hesitate on purchasing the lens?its optical performance, price, and size are enough to earn our Editors' Choice award.

I'm game for any previous relationship arrangements. Considering I am a Frontier Brain, all trainers (well, at least most) end up visiting the Battle Frontier to test their strength outside of gyms and the regional league. So throw whatever ideas you guys have, doesn't make much of a difference, Jared is a pretty friendly guy overall.
