Windows Intune users: Final Windows 8 bits are available for download

Microsoft is continuing to slowly expand the pool of existing Windows users to whom the final, released-to-manufacturing (RTM) Windows 8 bits are available.

The latest group who can now grab the RTM bits, as of August 30, are Windows Intune subscribers. (Thanks to reader @timkefford, who alerted me to the availability today. His screen shot is below.

intunegetswin8

Microsoft officials confirmed availability, noting that Intune users are getting access to the bits a few days earlier than originally scheduled. Intune users were slated to get the Windows 8 RTM bits on September 1 -- the same day that volume-license customers without Software Assurance are supposed to get them. (Volume licensees without SA can purchase Windows 8 through Microsoft Volume License Resellers as of September 1, Microsoft officials have said.)

Windows Intune is Microsoft's cloud-based PC management and security service. Intune users get rights to current and future versions of Windows ? similar to what they?d get if they signed up for Microsoft?s Software Assurance volume-licensing program. Microsoft delivered the third iteration of Windows Intune earlier this summer.

It's rather ironic, but the on-premises piece of Windows Intune doesn't yet support Windows 8 and won't until some time after Windows 8 is generally available. (Thanks to @phillippmuller for reminding me of that fact.)

General availability of Windows 8 for those that don't yet have the RTM bits is slated for October 26. The Windows 8 launch will be October 25 in New York City.

Next week, on September 4, Microsoft is slated to make the Windows Server 2012 bits available for evaluation and purchase worldwide by customers. On that day, Microsoft will be holding a virtual launch for Windows Server 2012, kicking off at 8 am PT/11 am ET.

Drama in Iran wins Egypt president a bold image

(AP) ? Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's international debut made its biggest splash at home. After he publicly denounced Syria's regime while being hosted by Damascus' top ally Iran, Egyptian supporters and even some critics are lauding him as a new Arab leader that speaks truth to power.

That may have been precisely the point. The drama of his Tehran speech boosts Morsi, an Islamist from the Muslim Brotherhood who became his country's first freely elected president, as he works to entrench his authority in Egypt.

His speech also points to new images he is cultivating: The tough, fearless leader who speaks with the voice of a people who chose him. For Islamists, he was a Sunni hero against the Shiites.

"He bows in respect for his people, so world leaders bow to him," proclaimed a photo-montage posted on a Brotherhood-affiliated Facebook page.

In one frame, it shows Morsi bowing his head amid crowds of supporters in Tahrir Square. In the other, it shows Morsi sitting at the Nonaligned Movement summit in Tehran on Thursday, with several dignitaries stooped over him to listen as if bowing and hanging on his every word.

For critics, the gushing support is reminiscent of the unquestioning praise given in state media to his predecessor, ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Moreover, they point out that behind the dramatic gestures, Morsi is so far doing little to bring actual dramatic change in Egypt's foreign policy. Morsi is being cautious, reluctant to turn sharply against Egypt's main Mubarak-era allies, Saudi Arabia, the United States and even Israel. That is in part because he is constrained by the realities of the region and by his need for allies as he tries to address Egypt's domestic woes.

Morsi makes his first visit as president to the U.S. in September for the annual U.N. General Assembly session. Washington might have been expected to be unhappy to see the first visit by an Egyptian president to Tehran since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution. Instead, it joined in the praise.

State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell welcomed Morsi's comments on Syria as "very clear and very strong," particularly as they were made in Tehran "to some people who need to hear it there."

Since his inauguration in late July, Morsi has promised a more independent foreign policy, saying Mubarak's close adherence to an American line made Egypt ineffectual and irrelevant in the Middle East. Morsi's supporters touted his speech as an example of his new approach.

His flair in Tehran was certainly a break from the tone of Mubarak's foreign policy, which usually saw dry repetitions of long-held stances and shunned drama. In contrast, Morsi swept in to visit a longtime rival, eagerly shook the Iranian president's hand, then gave a hearty call for world support of Syria's rebels against an "oppressive regime that has lost its legitimacy."

"People haven't heard an Egyptian leader speaking in this fashion, speaking out a foreign policy position that struck a chord with the region," said Michael W. Hanna, an Egypt expert at New York's Century Foundation. "This is the first time that Egypt struck a populist note in terms of its foreign policy in probably decades."

Even one of Morsi's staunchest domestic critics, Mohamed Abu Hamed, tweeted: "To the president: a salute of appreciation for your speech in Tehran summit. I hope you implement the ideas you mentioned."

He also won praise from ultraconservative Sunnis in Egypt who are key allies for Morsi and who only days earlier were loudly denouncing his trip to Shiite majority Iran. The ultraconservative Salafis despite Shiites as heretics.

In his speech, Morsi hit notes that were music to the Salafi ears. He kicked off the address with a salute to Abu Bakr and Omar, the companions of the Prophet Muhammad and his first successors. Mentioning them was seen as an implicit snub to Iran: Sunnis revere them, but Shiites hate them because they are seen as cheating the man they see as the rightful successor, Ali.

One prominent Egyptian Salafi cleric praised Morsi for affirming Egypt's Sunni identity.

"The comments had a huge effect and shook the hearts of Iranians like earthquakes," said Sheik Mohammed Gweili.

A hardline cleric in Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia, Suleiman al-Odah, wrote on his Twitter account: "Let all Arab leaders go to Iran if they will speak the truth like President Morsi did."

Dozens of supporters lined up the airport road to receive Morsi upon his return from Iran. "Free revolutionaries, we will complete the path," they chanted.

"Egyptians felt that their president speaks with their tongue and is strong through their will that elected him," Hussein Ibrahim, the head of the Brotherhood majority in the most recent, now-dissolved parliament, wrote on his Facebook page. "Outside Egypt, the Arab brothers feel that Egypt is returning to its place and is filling the gap that was caused by the previous regime."

For some, the effusive praise was worrying.

Sarah Othman, a prominent blogger and columnist in the independent El-Badil online newspaper, criticized Morsi's goading of the Iranians with the Sunni Islamic references as "childish, too naive and unbecoming of someone with such a high position." It "was only met with approval by fanatics and sectarians."

She compared it to an earlier instance of bravado by Morsi, when in his first political speech as president before a crowd in Cairo's Tahrir Square he opened his jacket to show he wasn't wearing a bulletproof vest. That may have worked in Tahrir, she said, but "there is something for every occasion."

Ibrahim Eissa, another prominent columnist, said the praise for Morsi overlooked its cautious political calculations. He noted Morsi made little criticism of Israel ? "he didn't even use the phrase 'Israeli crimes," Eissa wrote, and reduced the Palestinian issue to that of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and other measures that Mubarak would usually condemn as well.

So far, Morsi has made little change in the Mubarak-era relationship with Israel. Morsi has promised to preserve the landmark Egypt-Israel peace treaty and security cooperation has continued as Egypt's military wages an operation in Sinai against Islamic militants who have attacked Israel and Egyptian troops.

Morsi has spoken more warmly of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic militant group that rules Gaza. But he has not significantly eased access to Gaza through their shared border, a key Hamas concern. He has also sought to warm up to Saudi Arabia, a key ally of Egypt but a longtime rival of the Brotherhood.

Hanna, of the Century Foundation, said Morsi is in no condition to make major changes at a time when he has to deal with a faltering economy that needs aid from allies.

Egypt "has no economic base upon which to project power in the region. We are talking about a rhetorical shift in the near term."

PAINTER COLUMN: UCLA football team's future already is here

HOUSTON - UCLA finally found its quarterback of the future in Brett Hundley.

At least everything about his debut Thursday indicated as much.

Hundley took the first play from scrimmage and ran 72 yards, somehow dancing between and around three defenders with the help of just one teammate blocking for him down field.

He ran into the end zone for a touchdown that settled the butterflies for him, Jim Mora - also making his debut as coach - and UCLA fans desperate for a quarterback to covet.

Hundley wasn't perfect, but he sure was good as he led UCLA to a 49-24 win over Rice at Rice Stadium.

Hundley completed 21 of 28 passes for 202 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

"I was happy. That's crazy to be able to score a touchdown on the first play," Hundley said. "God is good. That was a key play. I've got to get better, but I had fun."

He had a freshman mistake, telegraphing his pass all the way to San Antonio and never saw linebacker Cameron Nwosu, who snatched the ball in front of Shaq Evans for an interception with 41 seconds left in the first half. The mistake wasn't a killer since Damien Holmes recovered a fumble and returned it 43 yards for a score 24 seconds later. UCLA led 35-24 at halftime and never was challenged after that.

"I think he did a nice job at times and sometimes he was a little hesitant," Mora said about Hundley. "The throw at the end of the ... half, he'd like to have back.

He didn't see that linebacker drifting in from his blind side, but he'll get better from this."

Hundley's grandmother, who lives in Houston, was in attendance along with a group of 15 friends and family who flew in from Los Angeles for the Hundley debut.

It was a debut they'll never forget.

He wore a dog-tag necklace with a cross, given to him by his stepmom. He wore it all through camp in San Bernardino, where he won the starting job, so he saw no reason to change it.

When Hundley was a high school quarterback in Chandler, Ariz., he would eat calzones and take a nap before the game.

That wasn't the case Thursday.

He listened to Dwelle, music he deems "chill," and relaxed. He claimed he wasn't that nervous.

"Hundley did OK," running back Johnathan Franklin said while laughing because Hundley was within earshot.

"Nah, he did a great job. He needed that first play. Brett's a great player, and I expected great things out of him."

Just not ripping off a big-play touchdown on his first carry. UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone drew that play up for Hundley to get the ball to Franklin, but Hundley noticed some space, kept the ball, ran to the outside and with a block downfield from Evans, he scored.

"I don't know how I split those defenders," Hundley said.

He can watch it on tape later.

"Wow, I didn't draw that one up like that," Mazzone said. "I drew it up to put in Franklin's hands. He pulled it and took off."

Hundley shook hands and took off after the game too, but turned back when tight end Joseph Fauria, who hauled in the 22-yard touchdown reception, shouted his name.

The senior put his arm around Hundley, and the two walked into the Rice Stadium tunnel discussing the game.

Then Hundley got a handshake from athletic director Dan Guerrero.

"I told him, `Way to lead,' " Guerrero said. "He showed poise and had command of the offense."

Quarterback controversy is a phrase that has defined UCLA the past few years, but it's no longer a hip term, unless you talk about that Matt Barkley billboard that was in Westwood.

There wasn't really a quarterback competition anyway, since Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut were clearly in the running for backup quarterback duties.

Even former UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, fired after four lackluster seasons as UCLA's coach, took to Twitter to make sure everyone knew he was the coach who recruited Hundley.

Of course, he was the same coach who didn't use him last year, either.

"Touchdown for Brett Hundley on his first collegiate play," Neuheisel said. "The recruiting was worth it."

Hundley was worthy in his debut as UCLA's starting quarterback. Now let's see what he can do for an encore against Nebraska next week at the Rose Bowl.

At least from his debut, UCLA can look forward to a quarterback with a bright future.

U.S. soldier accused of leading militia plot was suspect in wife's death

(Reuters) - The U.S. Army private accused of being the ringleader of an anti-government militia in Georgia was a suspect in the death of his wife months before prosecutors say he and three fellow soldiers murdered two people to keep their clandestine group secret, authorities said.

Isaac Aguigui funded the anarchist militia FEAR, or Forever Enduring Always Ready, with up to $500,000 in life insurance benefits he collected after his wife's death in July 2011, prosecutors said.

Aguigui and three other soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart in southeastern Georgia near Savannah have since been charged with murder and other offenses stemming from the December 5, 2011, shooting deaths of a former soldier and his teenage girlfriend.

Aguigui, 21, and two others were scheduled to appear in court in Long County, Georgia, for a hearing on Thursday. A third co-defendant reached a plea deal with prosecutors on Monday.

The accused militia members had plotted to assassinate President Barack Obama and to attack their Army base and a dam in Aguigui's home state of Washington, Assistant County District Attorney Isabel Pauley said during those proceedings.

They also discussed poisoning the apple crop in Washington state and had purchased $87,000 worth of weapons to carry out their planned attacks, she said.

Prosecutors said the group crossed the line from conspiracy to actual violence when they killed Michael Roark, 19, and Tiffany York, 17, whose bodies were found in a wooded area near the base, in a bid to keep them from exposing the militia.

One of the four accused killers, Private First-Class Michael Burnett, pleaded guilty on Monday to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter and agreed to testify against his three co-defendants.

As part of the plea deal, he would be spared the death penalty so long as he cooperates.

WIFE'S SUSPICIOUS DEATH

Months before the two slayings in December, military authorities were investigating Aguigui's role in the death of his wife, also a soldier at Fort Stewart, according to Sergeant John Kruse of the police department in Wenatchee, near Aguigui's northwest Washington hometown of Cashmere.

Kruse told Reuters on Wednesday he inquired about Aguigui with the Army Criminal Investigation Command when a member of Aguigui's family approached the police sergeant with concerns she had about her relative. At the time, Kruse said, Aguigui was on leave from the Army and visiting his old neighborhood.

In addition to confirming the relative's claims that Aguigui was under investigation in connection with the suspicious death of his wife, Kruse said he also confirmed with a local gun merchant that Aguigui had recently purchased 15 firearms, several of them semiautomatic rifles.

Kruse said he informed the FBI about his findings and that Aguigui was interviewed by FBI agents before he returned to Fort Stewart.

Army Criminal Investigation Command spokesman Chris Grey said the agency has an ongoing investigation against Aguigui but declined to comment further. The FBI declined comment.

Pauley, the Long County prosecutor, also has said the death of Aguigui's wife, Deirdre Wetzker Aguigui, was regarded as suspicious. None of the authorities Reuters contacted revealed any of the circumstances known about her death.

She was 24 years old and five months pregnant when she died in July 2011, said her father, Alma Wetzker, reached by telephone at his home in Minnesota. He declined to speculate about his daughter's death while it was under investigation.

He said the couple met at the U.S. Military Preparatory Academy in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

"Isaac is a natural leader and he has tremendous capacity to do whatever he wants to accomplish," Wetzker said, adding that his daughter "never would have gone along with what they're accusing Isaac of."

His late daughter was an Arab-language linguist for the Army who had served in Iraq and was promoted to the rank of sergeant shortly before her death, he said.

Locals react to Paul Ryan's GOP vice president nomination speech

Here are some local reactions to Paul Ryan's acceptance speech as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

For more coverage of the Republican National Convention, visit ydr.com.

---? Scott Burkholder, president of the York 912 Patriots:

"I think he did a good job of pumping up the crowd. He went after (President Barack) Obama and that's one of his main jobs in this campaign."

He believes that Ryan will go after the president more than Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Ryan has more of an attack-dog mentality.

---? Charles Wurster, president of the Republican Club of York County:

Wurster said he was impressed that Ryan "made a commitment ... to save Medicare" and that he focused on growing the economy.

"I'm really impressed with both Paul Ryan's and Mitt Romney's character ... and their commitment to family."

---? Kathleen Lucas, a member of the Democratic State Committee, said Ryan's speech was "embarrassing."

"He did mention corporate welfare, which made me happy, because he did not mention that before," Lucas said.

Lucas said Ryan's remarks on making job creation the first matter of businesses is dishonest, because most of what he has proposed so far has involved abortion and birth control.

"I think any woman or anyone who loves a woman . . . would be crazy to vote for this guy. He's out of his mind."

---? Salome Johnson, first vice president of the York chapter of the NAACP and an elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention, thought Ryan's speech was "good in terms of energy."

"It was a good performance, but that's what it was -- a performance," she said.

Johnson believes the Ryan and Romney see the truth as "one way" and that way is to make sure it is against the present administration.

"I neither begrudge (Ryan) his upbringing, nor do I begrudge Mitt Romney his millions -- God bless them" Johnson said. "But that doesn't mean that their views and their way is the only way."

---?Professor Tom Hall of York College, who teaches a course on argumentation:

"I thought it went across well with the audience. And I think there are a number of strategies going on in this particular speech," Hall said.

He said Ryan focused more heavily on the issue of leadership than other speakers had during the convention.

He said Ryan addressed criticism about Romney's wealth and concerns about his faith. He said Ryan also addressed the "argument that's been made that the problems that we're suffering from now are really the result" of the George W. Bush administration.

---? Ed Mundorf, a member of the York 912 Patriots who supported former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum in the primary:

"I hope (non-conservatives will) understand what he wants to do is to help the country." The deficit was 10 trillion when Obama took office. It's now almost $16 trillion.

"It's a complete reversal of what he was going to do."

Ryan talked about what the Obama administration said it was going to do and how it is not any better four years later.

Staff writers Ed Mahon, Rebecca LeFever and Teresa Ann Boeckel contributed to this report.

Sweetened drinks may be linked to premature births

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who drink a lot of sweet sodas during pregnancy may be more likely to give birth prematurely, a new study suggests.

The study, of more than 60,000 pregnant women in Norway, found that those who drank one sugary soda a day were up to 25 percent more likely to give birth prematurely than those who avoided the sweetened drinks.

However, it's not clear whether the drinks themselves are to blame for the early births.

"We are all desperately searching for causes of preterm birth," said Dr. Michael Katz at the New York-based March of Dimes foundation, a non-profit organization that works to improve babies' health. But, added Katz, who was not involved in the study, "this study does not indicate that (drinking soda) is a tremendously serious risk of any sort."

What women eat during pregnancy has come under scrutiny in recent years. Studies have suggested that a host of different foods, from fish to caffeine, could affect pregnancy outcomes, including premature birth.

In the US, about 1 in every 8 babies is born prematurely, before 37 weeks' gestation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those that survive may have neurological problems, or poor vision and hearing.

Previous research in Denmark suggests that drinking artificially sweetened soda increases the risk of preterm birth.

So Dr. Linda Englund-?gge, who led the research at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenberg, Sweden, wanted to see if her team would find the same effect in Norwegian women.

They looked at data on 60,761 Norwegian women who participated in a large-scale survey on mother and child health done between 1999 and 2008. The women answered questions on lifestyle, health and nutrition, including how many sweetened sodas they drank, at weeks 15, 22 and 30 of their pregnancy,

During the ten-year study, 3281 babies were born prematurely - about 5.4 percent of births. Researchers found that those births were strongly associated with women who had a high intake of sugary drinks.

Women who drank more than one sugar sweetened drink in a day increased their chances of delivering early by 25 percent over those who never drank sugary drinks.

Those who drank artificially sweetened sodas on a daily basis were 11 percent more likely to give birth prematurely than those who never drank the sweet beverages.

Body weight also seemed to be a factor, with the strongest association between preterm birth and sugary drinks seen among overweight women.

Those who drank at least one sugary soda a week were 30 percent more likely to deliver preterm than overweight women who never drank sodas. The risk increased by 41 percent if they drank soda every day.

OTHER FACTORS

However, the new findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, cannot prove that sugary drinks cause preterm births. Lifestyle and other factors that go along with high sugar consumption may also play a role.

Nutrition, maternal age, smoking, alcohol, obesity, chronic health problems like diabetes, and genetic conditions, have all been implicated in preterm birth.

The authors note in their report that women who drank the most sweetened drinks were also more likely to smoke, eat more calories, and have a higher body mass index (BMI) - a measure of weight relative to height - than those who drank fewer sugary drinks.

But for now, Englund-?gge and her colleagues can only speculate on the causes of the link between the sugary beverages and preterm births.

"What we think is that those women who have a high intake of both (types of soda) might have another dietary pattern than those who say they don't drink either of those beverages," Englund-?gge told Reuters Health.

Previous research suggests that breakdown products of the sweetener aspartame could play a role in premature birth. High levels of the sugar glucose in women who eat a lot of sugar have also been implicated.

"We don't want to say that pregnant women shouldn't drink sugary or artificially sweetened drinks," said Englund-?gge. But women should try to cut down on sugar and eat more fruit and vegetables when they are pregnant, she added.

Katz agreed that the study should not be a cause of anxiety, but if women are concerned they should avoid drinking sweetened drinks. "Water is an excellent thirst quencher," he said.

Satellites See Isaac Make Landfall Over Louisiana

Hurricane Isaac made two landfalls late last night (Aug. 28) and in the wee hours of this morning, and NASA satellites caught the whole show from their perch in orbit.

Isaac made its first landfall over a small spit of land in Plaquemines Parish in southeast Louisiana at 7:45 p.m. EDT (1145 UTC) before re-emerging over water. It stalled over waters near the Louisiana coast for several hours before making its second landfall at 2:15 a.m. CDT (0715 UTC) just west of Port Fourchon.

The storm made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 80 mph (130 kph). Isaac is still a hurricane and is maintaining its strength over the wetland-dominated terrain of southeastern Louisiana.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's GOES-13 satellite spied the landfalls, and an animation made from its observations covers the period from Aug. 27 through early today (Aug. 29). A visible light image from the satellite spied the first landfall as sunlight was fading over the United States.

NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite captured a view of Isaac's rainfall rates on at 11:05 p.m. EDT yesterday, just 3 hours and 20 minutes after its first landfall in southeastern Louisiana. The heaviest rainfall rates, near 2 inches (50 millimeters) per hour surrounded the center of the storm, causing inland flooding on its slow crawl, according to a NASA statement.

Flooding is a big threat from Isaac because of its slow movement, and because it is drawing a lot of energy from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, NASA said. ?Levees in Plaquemines Parish have been overtopped in some areas, though levees in New Orleans are holding and pumps are working.

Isolated tornadoes are also possible as Isaac continues moving inland, and a tornado watch has been put in place for some areas of Louisiana and Mississippi until 4 pm CDT.

Samsung introduces ATIV Tab: a 10.1-inch Windows RT tablet

Samsung introduces ATIV Tab a 101inch Windows RT tablet

Samsung's busy cranking out its fall lineup here in Berlin, and among the new entries is the ATIV Tab, a Windows RT-packing cousin of the Galaxy Note 10.1. The new 10.1-inch slate isn't quite as aggressive as its Android counterpart and centers on a 1,366 x 768 display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 5MP rear camera paired with a 1.9MP front-facing cam, and ports for micro-HDMI as well as USB. Dimensionally, the tablet is as light and skinny as you'd hope: it weighs 20.1 ounces (570g) and measures a slim 8.9mm thick. The 32GB and 64GB storage options aren't shockers given the extra space Windows and the bundled copy of Office 2013 Home and Student 2013 will demand, but there's a treat for long-haul users in the battery -- it's been upgraded from the 7,000maH pack of the Note 10.1 to an ample 8,200mAh unit. Samsung hasn't handed out launch details, but it's safe to say that the ATIV Tab won't arrive any sooner than October 26th.

Tech Tuesday ? Workers' Comp Claims Go Mobile - ISU Insurance ...

According to a recent Insurance Journal article, the University of Alabama of Birmingham has created a new mobile application for workers? compensation claims.

Who It?s For: Any company with a workers? compensation claim. The application created by UAB is currently being utilized by the managers and supervisors of the local businesses with whom UBA partners to handle workers? comp claims.

How It Works: The manager or supervisor downloads the mobile application to his or her smart phone or computer. An icon appears on the phone or computer screen that, when clicked, opens to a web browser with a form. When an employee is injured on the job, the manager fills out this form with the injured person?s information and details of the injury. This form is then submitted to the Emergency Department as the patient is being transported to the hospital.

The Benefits:

  • Expedites patient care
  • Allows for better service to the injured employee and the employer
  • Ensures accurate information is sent to the Emergency Department so healthcare professionals know exactly what to expect
  • Claims forms and paperwork are properly sent
  • Drug and alcohol tests are done in a efficient and effective manner

STAY AWAY, BROTHER

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says his brother, the former president, is smart to stay away from the Republican convention because he will just become more of a target for President Barack Obama.

"The president has spent a lot of time and energy around this notion that 'I can't do anything about it. It's all Bush's fault. You know I'm trying, but it's not working because it's Bush's fault,'" Bush told ABC News. "Now we're in year four of a presidency, think back into American history, think of a president that is blaming his predecessor in the fourth year. So why encourage the bad behavior and I think my brother is smart to stay away."

France opens inquiry into claims of Arafat poisoning

French prosecutors have opened a murder enquiry into Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's 2004 death near Paris following claims he may have died of polonium poisoning, sources close to the matter told AFP Tuesday.

The probe comes after Arafat's family launched legal action in France last month following reports the veteran Palestinian leader may have died from radioactive polonium.

Arafat's widow Suha and his daughter Zawra lodged a murder complaint on July 31 in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. Arafat died at age 75 at a military hospital near Paris in 2004.

"A judicial murder enquiry has been opened, as expected following the complaint from Mrs. Arafat," a source close to the matter told AFP. Another source confirmed the probe had been opened.

The Palestinian Authority hailed the move.

"We welcome this decision and (Palestinian) president Mahmud Abbas has officially asked French President Francois Hollande to help us to investigate the circumstances of the martyrdom of late president Arafat," senior Palestinian official Saeb Erakat told AFP in Ramallah.

Allegations that the Nobel Peace laureate was poisoned were resurrected last month after Al-Jazeera news channel broadcast an investigation in which experts said they found high levels of polonium on his personal effects.

Polonium is a highly toxic substance which is rarely found outside military and scientific circles, and was used to kill former Russian spy turned Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko, who died in 2006 shortly after drinking tea laced with the poison.

Suha Arafat has said she backs exhuming her late husband's remains from his mausoleum in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

A Swiss radiology lab at the Lausanne University Hospital Centre said on Friday it has received Suha Arafat's go-ahead to test his remains for poisoning by polonium.

French news website Slate.fr on Tuesday published a copy of the medical report into Arafat's death and said his symptoms were not consistent with polonium poisoning.

Arafat was sent to the Percy military hospital in Clamart outside Paris after suffering from nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, acute diarrhea and thrombocytopenia -- an abnormally low amount of platelets in the blood.

Doctors at the hospital conducted a wide range of tests but were unable to determine the exact cause of his illness.

A few days after his arrival in France, Arafat lapsed into a coma and he died on November 11, 2004. No autopsy was conducted.

"The hypothesis of polonium does not stand up to scrutiny," Marcel Francis-Kahn, the former chief of rheumatology at Paris's Bichat hospital, told Slate.fr.

"All experts know that poisoning by radioactive material does not lead to the symptoms seen in Arafat," he said, noting that he also suffered no traditional effects of radiation poisoning such as hair loss and a massive drop in white blood cells.

At the time of Arafat's death, Palestinian officials alleged he had been poisoned by long-time foe Israel, but an inconclusive Palestinian investigation in 2005 ruled out poisoning, as well as cancer and AIDS.

Israel has consistently denied the allegations, accusing Suha Arafat and Palestinian officials of covering up the real reasons for the death of the former leader, who led the struggle for Palestinian statehood for nearly four decades.

Home Price Index, monthly since April 2007

The housing market recovery appears to be sustainable.

According to the Federal Housing Finance Agency?s Home Price Index, home prices rose by a seasonally-adjusted 0.7 percent?between May and June 2012.?The index is now up 3.0% over the past 12 months, and made its biggest quarterly gain since 2005 last quarter.

The FHFA?s Home Price Index measures home price changes through successive home sales for homes whose mortgages are backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, and for which the property type is categorized as a ?single-family residence?.

Condominiums, multi-unit homes and homes with jumbo mortgages, for example, are excluded from the Home Price Index, as are all-cash home sales.

June?s HPI gives buyers and seller reason to cheer, but it?s important to remember that the Home Price Index ? like so many other home valuation trackers ? has a severe, built-in flaw. The HPI uses aged data. It?s nearly September, yet we?re talking numbers from June.

Data that?s two months old has limited meaning in today?s housing market. It?s reflective of the housing market as it looked in the past.

And, even then, to?categorize the HPI as ?two months old? may be a stretch.?Because it often takes 45-60 days to close on a home sale, the home sale prices as reported by the July Home Price Index are the result of purchase contracts written from as far back as February 2012.

Buyers and sellers in search of real-time home price data, in other words, won?t get it from the FHFA.

The Home Price Index is a useful housing market gauge for law-makers and economists. It highlights long-term trends in housing which can assist in allocating resources to a particular policy or project. For home buyers and sellers , however, it?s decidedly less useful. Real-time data is what?s most important.

For that, talk to a real estate professional.

Lexmark to cut 1,700 jobs, stop making inkjets

(AP) ? Lexmark is cutting 1,700 jobs, or almost 13 percent of its workforce, and says it will stop making inkjet printers as part of a drive to cut costs as it deals with shrinking sales of inkjets.

The printer and software company said Tuesday that it will close its inkjet supply plant in the Philippines by the end of 2015. It is also putting its inkjet technology up for sale.

Lexmark had about 13,300 employees as of Dec. 31. Lexmark has been shifting its focus from consumer inkjet printers, focusing on higher-profit laser printers and supplies for businesses and software services.

It has made a series of acquisitions, including Luxembourg's BDGB Enterprise for about $148 million. This purchase included BDGB's U.S. subsidiary Brainware Inc., which provides data capture software to businesses.

The job cuts include about 1,100 manufacturing jobs. Lexmark says the moves will save it $85 million in 2013 and $95 million a year by 2015. It expects to book costs of $160 million over three years for the restructuring.

Lexmark International Inc., based in Lexington, Ky., says it will continue to provide support and supplies for its inkjet printers still in use.

The restructuring is the second in less than a year for Lexmark, which said in January it would cut 625 jobs.

Lexmark in July reported second-quarter results that fell short of Wall Street expectations as the economic crisis in Europe pulled down demand.

Lexmark's stock closed Friday at $19.01 per share. It has fallen from over $73 in 2006 and has sunk as low as $16.10 in the past year.
