Fighting in Syria starts fire in medieval souks

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels and residents of Aleppo struggled Saturday to contain a huge fire that destroyed parts of the city's medieval souks, or markets, following raging battles between government troops and opposition fighters there, activists said.

Some described the overnight blaze as the worst blow yet to a historic district that helped make the heart of Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial hub, a UNESCO world heritage site.

The labyrinth of narrow alleys lined with shops was once a major tourist attraction, but has been the scene of near-daily firefights and shelling in recent weeks after rebels who fought their way into the city two months ago pushed toward its center.

Amateur footage posted online by activists showed raging orange flames licking the wooden doors of shops as the wood crackled, and rebels using a small water hose as they struggled to put out the fire. Other videos showed a pall of smoke hanging over the city's skyline.

The fire started late Friday amid heavy government shelling and was still burning Saturday morning, activists said.

One Aleppo-based activist, Ahmad al-Halabi, estimated the blaze destroyed a majority of the shops in the district.

"It's a disaster. The fire is threatening to spread to remaining shops," said al-Halabi, speaking from the stricken area by telephone. He claimed Syrian authorities cut the water supply off the city, making it more difficult to put out the flames. He said rebels and civilians were working together to control the blaze with a limited number of fire extinguishers.

"It is a very difficult and tragic situation there," he said.

Once considered a bastion of support for Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime, Aleppo has in the last two months become the focus of the insurgency. Its fall would give the opposition a major strategic victory, with a stronghold in the north near the Turkish border.

Since the rebel offensive began in August, each side has controlled about half of the city and has repeatedly tried ? but failed ? to capture the rest.

Rebels launched Thursday what they said would be a "decisive battle" to drive Assad's forces out of Aleppo and fighting has since spread to wide swaths of the city.

The souks of Aleppo ? a maze of vaulted passageways with shops that sell everything from foods, fabrics, perfumes, spices and artisan souvenirs ? are a tactical prize for the combatants. They lie beneath the city's towering citadel where activists say regime troops and snipers have taken up positions.

Many of the shops have wooden doors, and clothes, fabrics and leather wares inside helped spread the fire, activists said.

The Aleppo souks are not the only Syrian cultural treasures to have fallen victim to the chaos of the country's uprising and the crackdown by the Assad regime.

Some of the country's most significant sites, including centuries-old fortresses, have been caught in the crossfire in battles between regime forces and rebels. Others have been turned into military bases, raising archaeologists' fears of damage.

Regime shelling of neighborhoods where the opposition is holed up has smashed historic mosques, churches and souks in the central Homs province and elsewhere the country. Looters have stolen artifacts from excavations and museums.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Syrian Observatory, said it was not clear how the fire at the Aleppo market was started but also said a large part of the souks have been destroyed. The group relies on a wide network of activists on the ground.

The claims could not be independently verified because of limitations on the work of journalists in Syria.

Fighting continued in many parts of Aleppo Saturday and activists said at least three people were killed, including two rebel fighters. Syria's state-run news agency SANA said soldiers were pursuing military operations against armed groups in Aleppo and its outskirts, inflicting heavy losses on the "terrorists," the term used by authorities to refer to rebels.

In the Damascus suburb of Qudsaya, activists said the bodies of at least eight men were found who appeared to have been summarily executed, but the circumstances were not immediately clear.

The Syrian uprising began in March 2011 with largely peaceful protests but has since transformed into an insurgency and civil war that has defied all attempts at a diplomatic solution. Activists say more than 30,000 people have been killed.

Want a fat paycheck? Pick the right college

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ?

While many college graduates are struggling to find jobs, alumni from certain schools are regularly pulling in six-figure salaries.

For the second year in a row, Princeton University's students have been pulling in the biggest paychecks, according to new data from salary research site PayScale.com. This year, Princeton graduates with at least 10 years of experience in their field of work are earning an average salary of $137,000.

Rounding out the top 10, are Harvey Mudd College, California Institute of Technology, the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, the United States Military Academy at West Point, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lehigh University, the Polytechnic Institute of New York University, Babson College and Stanford University.

Graduates from these schools earned an average mid-career salary of $122,500 -- up 5 percent from last year. This year's increase follows three years of declines, according to PayScale.

The schools with the highest-paid graduates typically fall into one of two categories: They're either engineering schools, since engineering is the highest-paid major, or they're very prestigious, so companies tend to recruit these grads first -- and pay them handsomely -- when making hiring decisions.

"Not only do (the most prestigious schools like Stanford) offer high-paying majors as well, but there's a level of notoriety that allows people to move into jobs more easily and get higher-paying jobs, and there's also a strong alumni network that helps you get jobs," said Katie Bardaro, lead economist at PayScale.

Graduates earn the highest starting salaries at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where alumni with five years of experience or less make an average of $76,000. The United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and Massachusetts Institute of Technology follow, with average starting salaries of $72,200 and $68,400.

Among the 10 schools with the lowest-paid graduates, the average mid-career salary remained steady this year, at $44,490. The five schools with the lowest-paid graduates were The Art Institute of Pittsburgh (the online division), Benedict College in South Carolina, Mississippi Valley State University, University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky, and Bethel University in Tennessee.

Lower earning potential is common among schools that offer traditionally low-paying majors, like art, said Bardaro. These schools are also often located in areas with lower cost of living, and many don't carry the same level of prestige as the top schools on the list, so it can be hard for students to stick out in a big stack of resumes.

Majors with the biggest pay-offs: The highest-paying majors this year were petroleum engineering, with an average mid-career salary of $163,000, followed by aerospace engineering, which pays an average $118,000. Meanwhile, child and family studies majors can work for more than 10 years in their field and still only earn an average $37,700. Social work is the next lowest-paying major, with a mid-career salary or $45,300.

From Kirsten's Kitchen to Yours: I'm a VeganMoFo - for the Whole ...

I'm a VeganMoFo for the whole month of October!

No, I'm not swearing at you or myself, a VeganMoFo is a vegan month of food, created by Post Punk Kitchen four years ago and this year more than 600 bloggers will be participating (that's a whole lotta vegan blog posts!!)

Doing what exactly? Well, we will be posting at least 20 posts this month all related to vegan food. Posts can contain recipes, restaurant or product reviews, or simply ramblings about veganism. Who knows what we'll see, it's my first time, it's just an adventure!

All of my posts will involve something from my DIY Pantry series, and will include the VeganMoFo badge to the left. Of course it will all be recipes, so stay tuned.

And in case you're a regular reader of this blog and are wondering if the lack of meat and dairy in my posts over the past several months means that I've gone vegan, well, not quite, but perhaps someday! But vegan cooking is still so fascinating to me that I will likely continue this trend for some time.

I have added the VeganMoFo blog roll to my blog roll if you're interested in seeing what others are doing. Personally, I think I'll spend more time reading blogs this month than actually cooking!

Hugs!

Business Article Marketing: Does It Work for Larger Companies ...

Author: Steve Shaw | Total views: 67 Comments: 0
Word Count: 799 Date:

For many years now article marketing has been the "go to" marketing tool for small business owners who want to market their websites. Increasingly though, I've noticed that interest is expanding to larger companies as well. I received this question recently from someone who works at a large corporation:

"Do you think that article marketing would work for a large company? I know it works well for small business owners and that it's great for establishing the expertise of an author, but as a large company we want to bring attention to the company and not any particular person in our organization. Also, I don't know if our traditional website would be very marketable. A lot of people these days have blogs and sites with lots of informational content, but our website is a static one that just has info about your company. Many thanks for your input on this!"

I'm so glad that someone asked this! There is no reason why submitting articles wouldn't work for a large company, and I know many SEO specialists who work with large companies and who use article marketing as part of an overall online marketing plan for the company.

I just want to be sure that you understand how article marketing works, and I think that will help you to understand why business article marketing is not restricted to just small businesses, but would actually work for any size of business.

Article marketing is great for establishing the expertise of an author, but that's not the main benefit by a long shot. The main reason that people engage in creating free reprint articles is to get a higher search engine ranking for their website. This is how article marketing helps improve a web page's ranking:

You submit articles on the general topic of your website. These would not be articles about your business or your website, but they would instead be articles that teach your readers things that they need to know about your general niche.

Along with every article you submit you will also create what is called a resource box. A resource box is where you tell a little more about your company, provide a link to your website, and give a reason to click the link to your website. You could list an author name in the resource box if you wanted, but it's not required. Many people who are marketing on behalf of a large company will just list the company name rather than a specific person.

In your resource box, you will have the opportunity to link words of your choosing to your website. The words that you would choose to link are called "keywords". Keywords are words of special significance for your website, words that are accurate in classifying what your website is about and what people are typing into Google to reach websites such as yours.

Through that link in your resource box where the keywords are linked to your website, you are sending very powerful information to Google and the other search engines about what your website is about. This helps Google and the other search engines to classify your website and rank it appropriately. With consistent marketing, ideally the pages on your website will show up high in the rankings when someone does a search for one of your keywords.

You can discover the best keywords for your website by using a keyword research tool--there are many of these available online. When you do keyword research, you will come up with a variety of different phrases associated with the topic of your website, and you will alternate using those phrases in your resource boxes each time you submit an article.

So, that is how article marketing helps business owners--it can help your website to get a higher ranking, and the higher the ranking the more people will be referred to your website. The more targeted visitors who are referred to your website, the more potential sales and business for you.

Article marketing works for all types of websites, whether they're the static traditional website or a blog. Even among small business owners, not everyone has a blog--many are marketing traditional websites.

I hope this helps explain how article marketing can work for people with businesses of all sizes. It's true that small business owners were the first to catch on to the power of article marketing, but now larger corporations are jumping on board too. The purpose of article marketing is to help drive targeted traffic to a website, and that's something that's desirable whether you're a solo business owner or have a huge organization.

Serb hero fishes the desperate from Danube suicide

(AP) ? On a bright autumn day, Renato Grbic was out fishing on the Danube with his brother when he heard a big splash. At first, he thought somebody had thrown something off the bridge.

Then he saw a man flailing in the water.

"We hurried and pulled the man out," Grbic recalls. "I remember telling him: Such a glorious day and you want to kill yourself!"

It was the first time Grbic saved a life. From that day 15 year ago, his own life would never be the same. The bright-eyed, tattooed restaurant owner from a shabby industrial zone on the outskirts of Belgrade has rescued 25 people who tried to kill themselves by jumping off the tall bridge over the Danube.

Always on alert in his little wooden motor boat, the burly 51-year-old has pulled people out of the river's muddy waters without asking for anything in return.

"I couldn't turn my back on them," Grbic said. "They are desperate people."

Grbic has been dubbed the "Superman of the Danube" by his admirers and awarded a hero's plaque by Belgrade city authorities. But even "Superman" can't save everybody who jumps off the 18-meter- (60-foot-) high bridge: At least as many as he had saved have killed themselves at the spot since Grbic's first rescue.

"When I hear that someone has jumped and I wasn't there I really feel bad," he said. "My eyes are always on the bridge."

The Pancevo bridge became a favored suicide spot because it's Belgrade's only bridge over the Danube, which is bigger and colder and has stronger underwater currents than the city's other river, the Sava.

The first person Grbic pulled out of the Danube turned out to be mental patient. Grbic took him ashore, gave him dry clothes, hot tea and cigarettes. Later, an ambulance came and took the man away.

"That was it," Grbic says. "He didn't speak, they never do."

Over the years, Grbic has rescued men and women of all ages and social backgrounds. Grbic remembers them all, but "they never return or call, they hardly ever say thank you."

Goran Penev, a researcher with Serbia's Institute of Social Sciences, said Serbia's suicide rate is at the upper side of the European average. Penev noted there was a sharp rise in the early 1990s, at the beginning of the wars in the former Yugoslavia, but the situation has been relatively stable ever since. In 2011, nearly 1,300 people in Serbia ? a country of 7 million people ? took their lives.

Grbic has found that some of the people he rescued suffered from cancer or other terminal illnesses, while others cited poverty or unrequited love.

All, he said, felt lonely.

"It is a cry for help," he said. "They often do it in daytime so they would be seen, they want attention, love."

Only a couple weeks ago, a 22-year-old girl threw herself off the bridge near Grbic's restaurant. He was there to pick her up and ask: "Why did you do it?"

"For my boyfriend," she replied. "Do you think he would do it for you?" he asked in return.

Grbic said the girl was conscious and clear-minded when he plucked her out of the water. In winter, however, it is a question of minutes before people will lose consciousness in the freezing Danube and drown.

On one of those days, in mid-January about seven years ago, Grbic was just preparing to turn his boat to the shore and go home ? when he heard a scream.

An 18-year-old woman going through a mental crisis had burst out of her parents' car at the bridge, taken off her jacket and jumped, shouting: "Goodbye mom!"

Grbic said something had made him stick around: "It was a very windy day, a few minutes later and I would have gone."

The girl, Grbic said, is the only one who has stayed in touch.

Every January she comes to his fish restaurant to celebrate her "second birthday." She is married now and has a child. Grbic was invited to the wedding reception.

"My heart leaps every time I see her," he said.

Grbic has little or no track of the others he saved. It would be nice, he says, if they came to tell him how they were over a brandy at his restaurant.

"I gave them a second chance and it was up to them to use it well."

. . . .y'okay, so, I'm going to submit Arcelia over here if that's all right? I'll keep up with the other one too, and this one, I can keep them separate in my head.

Yeah, I'm completely sure. The only thing that ever gets my full attention in life is roleplaying and all the ones I'm in, creatively speaking anyway, I can think of this version of Even Angels as being something like an alternate telling of it. Two potential tellings of a story that have the same basis, but play out differently.

Both are accurate, but are just different. Actually, it sounds a lot of fun when I think of it like that, seeing what'll happen with Arcelia and different characters with this is interesting to me. :3

Apple CEO apologizes for error-ridden new map app

(AP) ? Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized Friday for the company's error-ridden new mobile mapping service and pledged to improve the application installed on tens of millions of smartphones. In an unusual mea culpa, he invited frustrated consumers to turn to the competition.

Cook said Apple "fell short" of its own expectations.

"Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working nonstop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard," he said in a letter posted online.

Apple released an update to its iPhone and iPad operating system last week that replaced Google Maps with Apple's own map application. But users quickly complained that the new software offered fewer details, lacked public transit directions and misplaced landmarks, among other problems.

People have been flocking to social media to complain and make fun of the app's glitches, which include judging landscape features by their names. The hulking Madison Square Garden arena in New York, for instance, shows up as green park space because of the word "garden."

Until the software is improved, Cook recommended that people use competing map applications to get around ? a rare move for the world's most valuable company, which prides itself on producing industry-leading gadgets that easily surpass rivals.

Apple has made missteps in the past ? even under founder and CEO Steve Jobs, whose dogged perfectionism was legendary.

"I think they are clearing the air and, more importantly, clarifying why they had to do their own maps," said Tim Bajarin, a Creative Strategies analyst who's followed Apple for more than three decades.

He recalled an infamous problem with the iPhone 4's antenna that interfered with reception when people covered a certain spot with a bare hand. Jobs apologized, though he denied there was an antenna problem that needed fixing. Apple quickly recovered.

But Cook's remarks went further, saying the company was "extremely sorry" and promising to make swift changes.

Contrast that with Jobs' statement from 2010, when he said the antenna issue had been "blown so out of proportion that it's incredible."

Still, Jobs also acknowledged that Apple was "stunned and upset and embarrassed." But he insisted the antenna issue was not widespread and only a small number of users complained to Apple's warranty service.

On Friday, Cook said the new version of the mapping app was designed to give users the features they've been asking for. It includes turn-by-turn directions, voice integration and a 3-D flyover feature.

Google's map application for the iPhone did not give turn-by-turn directions or voice-guided navigation, although its version for Android devices does.

Google, Bajarin said, wouldn't license the turn-by-turn feature to Apple because Google prefers to give devices running its own Android software an advantage over the iPhone and iPad. Maps and navigation are among the most-used features of smartphones.

Cook said Apple's maps will get better as more people use the app and provide feedback.

That's true for all digital maps. Google's system wasn't perfect when it launched, but it got better over the years as users pointed out mistakes and helped the company collect its vast trove of data.

"Ultimately, what (Apple) discovered early on is that Google had access to 100 million iOS users who helped them build the Google Maps database, Bajarin said. "At some point Apple had to put its foot down."

It came time, he explained, for Apple to own the users of its mapping service, not Google.

But for now, Cook actually recommends that users look at other options ? including Google maps.

"While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app," Cook wrote.

Could Apple have avoided the debacle? Bajarin thinks so, maybe by acknowledging that the map app was a work in progress. That's what the company did when it released Siri, its virtual assistant. Customers understood.

Apple released the iPhone 5 last week and on Monday said it sold more than 5 million of them in three days. Although the number is a record for any phone, it was fewer than analysts expected.

On Friday, shares of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple Inc. closed down $14.22 to $667.10 amid a broader market decline.

Pope's butler on trial for leaking secret Church files

Pope Benedict?s former butler is on trial in Rome for the theft and leaking of confidential Vatican information.

Paolo Gabriele, who served the pope meals and helped to dress him, was arrested in May after police found confidential documents in his apartment.

He confessed, telling investigators that he saw evil and corruption throughout the organisation and wanted to help root it out.

Many Italians are angry that the leader of the Catholic Church seems unable to trust his inner circle.

?He has done harm by leaking this information, which was private to the church, because there will always be somebody who takes advantage of things?, one man says.

Another Rome resident says, ?In a way the Church could come out strengthened by this in the sense it could gain a new openness, a clear transparency in the hierarchy?.

LG Display countersues Samsung over OLED patent infringement

Samsung 55-inch OLED TV at CES

The strained relationship between the two tentpoles of Korea's tech industry is starting to wear, now that LG Display has counter-sued its local rival over OLED patents. Earlier this month, Samsung filed for an injunction accusing its frenemy of stealing secrets, but LG is claiming instead that it's the victim. If successful, Lucky Goldstar would seek a ban on devices including the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note on the pair's home turf -- so, yeah, this one looks like it's going to run and run.

The Government Discovers There Are 386,000 More Jobs Than It ...

This morning the BLS released the preliminary annual benchmark revision showing an additional 386,000 payroll jobs as of March 2012. The final revision will be published next February when the January 2012 employment report is released on February 1, 2013. Usually the preliminary estimate is pretty close to the final benchmark estimate.

The annual revision is benchmarked to state tax records. From the BLS:

Establishment survey benchmarking is done on an annual basis to a population derived primarily from the administrative file of employees covered by unemployment insurance (UI). The time required to complete the revision process?from the full collection of the UI population data to publication of the revised industry estimates?is about 10 months. The benchmark adjustment procedure replaces the March sample-based employment estimates with UI-based population counts for March. The benchmark therefore determines the final employment levels ...

Using the preliminary benchmark estimate, this means that payroll employment in March 2012 was 386,000 higher than originally estimated. In February 2013, the payroll numbers will be revised up to reflect this estimate. The number is then "wedged back" to the previous revision (March 2011).

This means the BLS under counted payroll jobs by 386,000 as of March 2012. This?preliminary estimate showed?an additional 453,000 private sector jobs, but 67,000 fewer government jobs (as of March 2012).

For details on the benchmark revision process, see from the BLS: Benchmark Article and annual benchmark revision for the new preliminary estimate.

The following table shows the benchmark revisions since 1979.

Use new employee FMLA guide as chance to review your policies ...

U.S. Department of Labor logoThe publication of a new U.S. Department of Labor guide to employees? FMLA rights signals an opportunity for everyone?including employers?to take a fresh look at this critical, sometimes confusing law.

THE LAW:? The FMLA covers private employers with at least 50 em??ployees if those employees work within 75 miles of one another. In cases where employees work remotely, the office they report to or take orders from is considered their workplace.

Employees of covered employers are entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave if they have worked for the employer for at least one year. The service need not be continuous, but work prior to a break in service of more than seven years does not count.

Employees may take leave for their own serious health condition or that of an immediate family member, family expansion, and military leave.

Some employees don?t enjoy the same FMLA protections other em??ployees do, including airline flight att...(register to read more)

New art-house app lets you take just one picture, ever

One Momento is an interesting social experiment in what's truly important in life

There are a lot of terrific camera apps out there. Most people prefer Instagram for its filters and ability to share your photos with others, while some prefer the more powerful set of tools Snapseed offers. One of the newest camera apps for your iPhone is One Memento, a curious "photography experiment" that allows you the ability to take just one single photograph.

Once you've signed in to the app through Twitter, you can flick your fingers to ceremoniously break the app's seal and take one?? and only one?? photograph. Once the picture is taken and edited using the supplied filters, the app assigns your memento a number, and uploads it to a searchable database.?Even if you're not interested in taking a photo to share, you can still look through the gallery of what appear to be some very impressive pictures. You can choose to like a photo, or share it with your friends.

We're somewhat intrigued by what some of the One Memento users have shared thus far. For Memento #1375, for example, uploader "Andy" shared a picture of the Great Sand Dunes National Park, explaining "I always wanted to visit the Great Sand Dunes and don't want to forget it." It's a great shot, and it's a great idea?? by allowing only one picture per person, One Memento is creating a database of 250,000 images that have actual meaning to the photographer.

You can download the free One Memento app on the Apple App Store.
