Plants moderate climate warming

Apr. 28, 2013 ? As temperatures warm, plants release gases that help form clouds and cool the atmosphere, according to research from IIASA and the University of Helsinki.

The new study, published in Nature Geoscience, identified a negative feedback loop in which higher temperatures lead to an increase in concentrations of natural aerosols that have a cooling effect on the atmosphere.

"Plants, by reacting to changes in temperature, also moderate these changes," says IIASA and University of Helsinki researcher Pauli Paasonen, who led the study.

Scientists had known that some aerosols -- particles that float in the atmosphere -- cool the climate as they reflect sunlight and form cloud droplets, which reflect sunlight efficiently. Aerosol particles come from many sources, including human emissions. But the effect of so-called biogenic aerosol -- particulate matter that originates from plants -- had been less well understood. Plants release gases that, after atmospheric oxidation, tend to stick to aerosol particles, growing them into the larger-sized particles that reflect sunlight and also serve as the basis for cloud droplets. The new study showed that as temperatures warm and plants consequently release more of these gases, the concentrations of particles active in cloud formation increase.

"Everyone knows the scent of the forest," says Ari Asmi, University of Helsinki researcher who also worked on the study. "That scent is made up of these gases." While previous research had predicted the feedback effect, until now nobody had been able to prove its existence except for case studies limited to single sites and short time periods. The new study showed that the effect occurs over the long-term in continental size scales.

The effect of enhanced plant gas emissions on climate is small on a global scale -- only countering approximately 1 percent of climate warming, the study suggested. "This does not save us from climate warming," says Paasonen. However, he says, "Aerosol effects on climate are one of the main uncertainties in climate models. Understanding this mechanism could help us reduce those uncertainties and make the models better."

The study also showed that the effect was much larger on a regional scale, counteracting possibly up to 30% of warming in more rural, forested areas where anthropogenic emissions of aerosols were much lower in comparison to the natural aerosols. That means that especially in places like Finland, Siberia, and Canada this feedback loop may reduce warming substantially.

The researchers collected data at 11 different sites around the world, measuring the concentrations of aerosol particles in the atmosphere, along with the concentrations of plant gases, the temperature, and reanalysis estimates for the height of the boundary layer, which turned out to be a key variable. The boundary layer refers to the layer of air closest to the Earth, in which gases and particles mix effectively. The height of that layer changes with weather. Paasonen says, "One of the reasons that this phenomenon was not discovered earlier was because these estimates for boundary layer height are very difficult to do. Only recently have the reanalysis estimates been improved to where they can be taken as representative of reality."

TechStars Boston Alum Placester Raises $2.5 Million For Its Professional Website Builder For Realtors

04-plymouth-ipadAfter launching out of TechStars Boston back in 2011, Cambridge-based real estate marketing platform?Placester?has raised $2.5 million in seed financing in a round led by new Boston seed fund, Romulus Capital, with participation from other angel investors. Founded in 2009 by a former real estate agent, Matt Barba, the service helps realtors launch their own websites. During TechStars, the startup was originally designed to help realtors with online advertising, but that soon changed. “Helping real estate professionals promote their listings online through syndication was our initial focus,” explains Barba. “However, we quickly learned that the vast majority of real estate professionals don’t have anything to promote,” he says. “Essentially, they didn’t have a website. We learned there was a much more fundamental problem to be solved: Helping real estate professionals establish themselves online.” Barba understood first-hand the difficulties realtors faced in putting their data online, including data access fees, paperwork, technical challenges, and more, because of his own background in real estate. Realtors have to pull their data from MLS (Multiple Listing Service – the regional entity where real estate professionals enter and store homes that are available for sale or rent),?then pay for an IDX integration allowing customers to search their listings. This can be expensive because there are 900 U.S. MLSes, and the information retrieval methods for these are not standardized. “This difference is one of the main contributing factors to the cost of creating a platform that allows real estate professionals to establish an online presence,” Barba says. “Additionally, most MLS’s charge fees to help offset the cost of purchasing the MLS software from third party vendors, and to provide additional services to the MLS’s agent membership. These fee’s aren’t overly burdensome to large brokerages, but can often be in the hundreds of dollars, which can be overwhelming for individual agents who are just starting to invest online,” he adds. These challenges lead to customers finding that a lot of realtors’ websites had out-of-date listings, which is a poor experience. Meanwhile, the existing website providers often caused problems of their own: they were slow to deliver, or used out-of-date technology, for example. Built alongside co-founder Frederick Townes, formerly the CTO at Mashable.com, Placester addresses these problems by offering a platform where realtors can create their own maintenance-free websites in around five minutes. The sites are based on WordPress,?optimized for SEO, and are mobile and tablet-friendly. For individual

(AP) ? NBA veteran Jason Collins became the first active male player in the four major American professional sports to come out as gay.

The 34-year-old center, who has played for six teams in 12 seasons, wrote a first-person account that was posted on Sports Illustrated's website Monday. Collins finished the season with the Washington Wizards and is now a free agent. He says he wants to keep playing.

"If I had my way, someone else would have already done this," he writes. "Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."

Collins played in a Final Four for Stanford and reached two NBA Finals. His twin brother, Jarron, was also a longtime NBA center. Collins says he told his brother he was gay last summer.

"Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue," NBA commissioner David Stern said in a statement.

Among those offering support on social media was former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, a friend from Stanford. She tweeted: "Very proud of my friend Jason Collins for having the strength & courage to be the first openly gay player in the NBA."

Collins was also college roommates with another member of an American political dynasty: Rep. Joe Kennedy III, D-Mass. In his account, Collins wrote that he realized he needed to go public when the congressman walked in Boston's gay pride parade last year ? and Collins couldn't join him.

Kennedy tweeted Monday that "I've always been proud to call (Collins) a friend, and I'm even prouder to stand with him today."

Mostly a backup in his career, Collins has averaged 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Nets, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Hawks, Celtics and Wizards. He was traded from Boston to Washington in February. Collins was the 18th pick in the first round of the 2001 NBA draft.

Several male athletes have previously come out after they retired, including the NBA's John Amaechi, the NFL's Esera Tuaolo and Major League Baseball's Billy Bean. But Collins is the first to do so while planning to keep playing.

Advocacy organization GLAAD released a statement from Aaron McQuade, who head of its sports program.

"'Courage' and 'inspiration' are words that get thrown around a lot in sports, but Jason Collins has given both ideas a brand new context," he said. "We hope that his future team will welcome him, and that fans of the NBA and sports in general will applaud him. We know that the NBA will proudly support him, and that countless young LGBT Athletes now have a new hero."

3 Taliban bombs target Pakistani politicians

PARACHINAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Taliban bombs targeting politicians in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday killed 11 people, the latest in a series of attacks meant to disrupt next month's parliamentary election, police said.

The wave of political violence has killed at least 60 people in recent weeks, and many of the attacks have been directed at candidates from secular parties opposed to the Taliban. That has raised concern the violence could benefit hard-line Islamic candidates and others who are more sympathetic to the Taliban because they are able to campaign more freely without fear of being of being attacked.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the three attacks, plus two others against secular parties in the southern port city of Karachi on Saturday that killed four people and wounded over 40.

"We are against all politicians who are going to become part of any secular, democratic government," Ahsan told The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location.

The first bomb on Sunday ripped through the campaign office of Syed Noor Akbar on the outskirts of Kohat city, killing six people and wounding 10, police officer Mujtaba Hussain said.

A second bomb targeted the office of another candidate, Nasir Khan Afridi, in the suburbs of Peshawar city. That attack killed three people and wounded 12, police officer Saifur Rehman said.

The politicians were not in their offices at the time of the blasts. They are both running as independent candidates for parliament to represent constituencies in Pakistan's rugged tribal region along the Afghan border, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in the country.

Many politicians running in the May 11 election from the tribal region have their offices located elsewhere and find it hard to campaign in their constituencies because of the danger. The two who were attacked Sunday are considered to hold relatively progressive views compared to the deeply conservative Islamic beliefs of many in the tribal region.

The third attack occurred in the town of Swabi, where a bomb went off during a small rally held by the Awami National Party, which has been repeatedly targeted by the Taliban. The blast killed two people and wounded five, said police officer Farooq Khan. The two candidates targeted in the attack, Ameer Rehman and Haji Rehman, were not hurt.

The Pakistani Taliban have been waging a bloody insurgency against the government for years that has killed thousands of civilians and security personnel. The group's goal is to oust Pakistan's democratic government and implement a system based on Islamic law.

In mid-March, the Taliban threatened attacks against three secular parties that have earned the militants' ire by supporting military operations against them in the northwest: the Awami National Party, the Muttahida Quami Movement and the Pakistan People's Party. The Taliban have carried out at least 20 attacks against politicians and campaign workers since then, mostly from these three parties.

The violence has forced the parties to close dozens of campaign offices and has prevented them from holding large political rallies that are normally the hallmark of Pakistani elections. Many of the candidates have had to find ways to campaign from a distance, relying more on social media, advertisements and even short documentaries to rally support.

That has put these candidates at a disadvantage, and many have complained the militant violence amounts to vote rigging.

Candidates from Islamic parties and others who have advocated negotiating peace with the militants rather than fighting them have been able to campaign with much less fear of being attacked.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, head of the Pakistan Muslim League-N party, held a rally with several thousand people in the northern town of Murree on Sunday without incident. Many analysts predict Sharif's party will come out on top in the parliamentary election.

The Taliban issued a statement earlier this year requesting that Sharif and the heads of the country's two largest Islamic parties mediate peace negotiations. Sharif declined but said he was a supporter of the talks.

The parties that have been targeted by the Taliban also support peace negotiations with the militants, but only if they lay down their weapons and accept the constitution first ? conditions the militant group has rejected.

Part of 9/11 plane landing gear found in NYC

By Chris Francescani

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A piece of landing gear believed to be from one of the commercial airplanes that crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, has been discovered, wedged between two lower Manhattan buildings, police said on Friday.

The piece of landing gear found in a narrow alleyway behind 51 Park Place and 50 Murray Street in Manhattan's financial district includes a "clearly visible" Boeing identification number, New York City Police spokesman Paul Browne said.

Browne said the discovery was made on Wednesday by a construction crew inspecting the rear of the Park Place building. The location is the site of an Islamic prayer space and community center that opened amid controversy in the fall of 2011, two blocks from Ground Zero.

The piece of landing gear, wedged one story above ground, is about 5 feet high and 3 feet wide (0.9 meter).

Police have secured the area between the buildings and are treating it as a potential crime scene, said Browne.

Nearly 12 years after two commercial airliners smashed into the two Manhattan skyscrapers, destroying them and killing nearly 3,000 people, city officials continue to turn up debris from the attack and identify human remains.

It will be up to the New York City medical examiner's office to determine whether to sift the soil around the site where the landing gear was found for more evidence.

This month the medical examiner's office said 39 possible human remains were discovered in 9/11 debris hauled years ago to the New York City borough of Staten Island, according to CBS News.

Since 2006, the painstaking work has led to 34 new positive identifications of victims.

UK terror plot leader jailed for minimum 18 years

LONDON (AP) ? The ringleader of an al-Qaida-inspired plot to detonate knapsack bombs in England was sentenced Friday to at least 18 years in jail.

Judge Richard Henriques said 31-year-old Irfan Naseer was "the leader, driving force and man in charge" of the elaborate plot, sentencing him to life with no possibility of parole for 18 years.

"Your plot had the blessing of al-Qaida and you intended to further the aims of al-Qaida," Henriques told Naseer in London as he sentenced the man nicknamed Big Irfan, or Chubbs, along with 10 accomplices. "Clearly nothing was going to stop you, short of intervention of the authorities."

Prosecutors had said the men, fired up by the sermons of U.S.-born al-Qaida preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, hoped to cause carnage on a mass scale. One of Naseer's accomplices was recorded calling the planned attack "another 9/11."

Police said the terrorist conspiracy was the most significant uncovered in Britain since a plot to blow up airliners in midair was foiled in 2006.

But the plot was undone by problems with money and logistics. No targets had been chosen and no bombs built when Naseer, Ashik Ali and Irfan Khalid, both now 28, were arrested in September 2011 in Birmingham, central England, after a huge investigation and surveillance operation by police and the security service.

Prosecutors said Naseer and Khalid had traveled to Pakistan for terror training, where they learned details of poisons, bomb-making and weaponry, and made "martyrdom videos" justifying their planned attacks.

On their return to England in July 2011, they began to recruit others to the plot and to raise money by posing as street collectors for Muslim charities. They also began experimenting with chemicals, the prosecution said, aided by Naseer's university degree in pharmacy.

But many of the group's plans soon went awry. Four other young men dispatched by the plotters to Pakistan for terrorist training were sent home within days when the family of one man found out. The four pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offenses.

Rahin Ahmed, an alleged co-conspirator described in court as the cell's "chief financier," tried to increase the group's budget by trading the money it made from bogus charity fundraising on the financial markets. Instead, he lost the bulk of the terror cell's money.

Among the pieces of evidence at the four-month trial was a sports injury cool pack, which prosecutors said Naseer had mistakenly believed would contain ammonium nitrate, a key bomb-making ingredient.

The group also considered other outlandish attacks, including tying sharp blades to the front of a truck and driving it into a crowd. Naseer was heard talking about the possibility of mixing poison into creams such as Vaseline or Nivea and smearing them on car handles to cause mass deaths.

Prosecutors said the men ultimately gravitated toward a plan to detonate up to eight knapsack bombs ? either on timers or in suicide attacks ? in a bid to cause destruction on a scale larger than the July 7, 2005, London transit bombings, which killed 52 commuters.

Naseer was recorded plotting about knapsack bombs going "boom, boom, boom everywhere," while Khalid said the attack would be "revenge for everything, what we're doing is another 9/11."

The trio was convicted in February of plotting terrorist attacks and sentenced Friday at Woolwich Crown Court, with Khalid getting a minimum of 12 years in prison and Ali a minimum of 10 years.

Eight others who had pleaded guilty to involvement also were sentenced.

Don't blame Canada: Former ambassador to Iran on Argo, America, and nukes

Canada's envoy to Tehran at the time of the Islamic revolution and the US hostage crisis, says Argo disappointed him and that he's worried about where Iran's nuclear program might lead.

By Ariel Zirulnick,?Staff writer / April 26, 2013

Former Canadian Ambassador to Iran Ken Taylor and his wife Pat, pose for photographers at the premiere of the film Argo in Washington, Oct. 2012. Taylor, who protected Americans at great personal risk during the Iran hostage crisis of 1979, has achieved some name recognition in the US since the 2012 movie 'Argo' swept theaters and the Academy Awards.

Former Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor is neither the James Bond lookalike he hoped might portray him in the Hollywood blockbuster "Argo" nor is he quite the Austin Powers double he says might have been a more accurate choice.

But he's achieved some name recognition in the US since the 2012 movie swept theaters and the Academy Awards, and he has plenty to say about Iran in 1979 and the country it has become since.?

Mr. Taylor was Canada's ambassador to Tehran in 1979 when the US embassy there was stormed and dozens of Americans were taken hostage. Six Americans escaped and spent months holed up with him, waiting for their extraction.

Those months are the premise of the Ben Affleck-directed movie, which Taylor mildly says took ?a bit of poetic license.?

Speaking before a gathering of the New England Canada Business Council in Boston yesterday, Taylor, who now lives in New York, joked that after friends saw "Argo" at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival, they called him and said, ?I thought Canada was involved.?

According to Taylor, he replied, ?That?s odd, So did I.?

As the tense months of being trapped inside the embassy wore on, Taylor tried to reassure the Americans that they would be home by Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then the Super Bowl. He warned the US that ?they?re going to wonder if Washington forgot about them.?

Taylor revealed little about the actual operation that got the six men and women safely back to the United States. But, he joked, at least the movie showed that he ?opened the front door of the embassy with great dexterity.?

Iran then

When Taylor arrived in Tehran in 1977, ?the country was booming.?

There were rumors that Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi ? more commonly referred to as simply ?the Shah? ? was preparing to buy Pan American Airways. It did not seem like the ?stalwart of the West? was going anywhere.

For all the blame heaped on the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for not predicting the Islamic Revolution, almost nobody saw it coming, he said. Afterward, the Ayatollah?s secular advisers told Taylor that even they didn?t expect the Shah?s government to fall like it did. ?

Revolutionary fervor did not sweep up the whole country the way it seemed to be portrayed in "Argo." And Taylor said a great disappointment for him was the way the movie portrayed Iranians, some of whom became ?marvelous friends? with him during his posting in Tehran.

?The movie was too heavy handed,? he said. ?It gave no idea that there is another side to the Iranian character. Everybody isn?t on the street. Everybody isn?t part of the revolution.?

Too many sanctions, too little talking

He is on board with the growing chorus of voices in Washington urging the Obama administration to ease up on its sanctions-heavy approach to negotiations with Iran although he acknowledges that Iran needs to give ground too.

Sometimes sanctions work, he says, citing South Africa during the apartheid era, but ?sometimes they strengthen resolve.?

When asked his opinion of whether Tehran has nuclear weapon ambitions, he cautions that ?Iran is an opaque society,? and there?s too little information to guess.

?I think they?ve got some military use in the back of their mind,? he says. ?But they don?t want to destroy themselves ? Maybe they are working at capabilities, but not necessarily producing [a nuclear weapon].?

That the military option for halting Iran?s nuclear development is ?on the table? worries Taylor, who points to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as cautionary for anyone considering going to war with Iran.

"A bombing mission would be a fatal error. It would solve nothing,? he says. ?It would postpone [Iran?s nuclear program] for two to three years,? but nothing more, because Iran?s nuclear facilities are too dispersed.

He says, ?I wake up every morning hoping [the military option] is still on the table? ? instead of being used.

Wii U Virtual Console now live on the eShop

Wii U Virtual Console now live on the eShop

The first of Nintendo's planned Wii U firmware updates went live just yesterday, bringing a much needed speed boost to software load times. And in that short time since, Nintendo's also made its retro-gaming Virtual Console portal available to users, effectively bypassing the need to boot into the Wii emulator for access. The downside to this new, belated convenience is that users will have to re-download any previously purchased Virtual Console titles, though that additional cost is relatively low at $1.00- $1.50 for NES and SNES games, respectively. Unfortunately, you'll still have to wait a bit longer for those beloved Game Boy Advance and N64 classics to make their way to the VC, as Nintendo plans to include those games sometime "in the future." Still, with band-aid number one out of the way for the ailing console and a host of tried-and-true classics now easily accessible, Wii U owners have a little something to tide them over until that late summer Pikmin 3 launch.

Designer Builds 3D-Printed Headphones That Use No Manufactured Parts

unboxedIf the whole of human knowledge were to be wiped out tomorrow, how would you recreate the consumer electronics industry so you can jam out to some rockin' tunes? Why you'd build these unique 3D-printed headphones. Except for some twists of wire, these cans consist of thin pieces of printed plastic and the speakers are actually plastic with a coil of copper wire embedded, by hand, into a set of tiny traces. Even the audio plug which consists of wire wrapped around a small plastic spindle.

Five Simple Solutions For Small Business Security | Young Upstarts

by Claire Taylor

If you own and operate a small business, you?ll find dozens of cyber security tips. Search the Internet for ?small business security? and pages upon pages of websites will be returned to you, telling you how to protect your computer systems. But what if you want to protect your physical property? In the technological age, these tips aren?t as easy to find.

Here are five simple solutions for small business security that you can implement almost immediately:

1. Point of Sale Position.

According to national crime statistics, approximately $300 billion is lost to business crime every year. Compare this to the approximately $20 billion lost to street crime and you can easily see why it?s so important to protect your business. One of the easiest things that you can do is position your point of sale properly. Don?t put your point of sale in front of a window where it is easily seen by all passers-by. In the same vein, you don?t want it so far back in your store that a robbery would never be noticed. Look for a position that will allow your employees to seek help should they need it, yet not show the world how much cash you have in the till.

2. Mirrors.

Shop Lifter

Even if you operate out of one room, there will be areas of the floor that are not readily visible. Take a good look around your space and decide where these blind spots are. Convex, concave and dome mirrors can make invisible corners and other areas easier to view. You may want to consider hiring a security professional to conduct a walk-through of your business to tell you where mirrors would be best placed. Check out www.mirrorpros.com for other security ideas.

3. Panic Buttons.

You?ll undoubtedly install a security alarm in your business to secure your property and assets. Make sure that your security package includes panic buttons that will silently alert your security monitoring company to an emergency. Panic buttons should be located at your point of sale, in every office and near the safe. You should consider installing a panic button in any room that your employees may flee to in an emergency, such as a closet, a storage room or even a bathroom.

4. Cell Phones.

With the boom in popularity of smartphones, many employers now require that their workers keep their cell phones in lockers or lunchrooms. While you don?t need to let your employees carry their phones with them, you should have a cell phone available in several locations throughout your business. These phones will allow your employees to call for help in an emergency should your phone lines be tampered with. Prepaid cell phones are excellent for this type of emergency purpose.

5. Cameras.

Security cameraConsider installing security cameras throughout your business. If you choose this option, be sure that you have a monitor set up in an office that is occupied while your business is in operation. This will ensure that at least one person can see the comings and goings of employees and customers, and will be alerted quickly in the case of a robbery attempt or other criminal activity.

Protecting your small business is a matter of personal choice but, if you don?t want to lose everything that you?ve worked hard to build, it?s the only choice that makes sense.

Follow the tips above to be sure that your business is as protected as it should be. If you need further assistance, consider hiring a professional to perform a security audit of your property.

Consolidate Business Loan with Personal Loan - UK Business Forums

Quote:

Does anyone know why Barclays or NatWest will not give my friend a personal loan to consolidate his business overdraft / loan?

Is their a law against loaning someone money for paying off a business loan?

No law as suchbut your pal would have a problem with interest paymets. The directors loan he makes to the company (assuming limited co) will be separate to the original loan. The company cannot claim back th einterest as an overhead unless your pal charges interest to the company for which he will create a taxable income but can't claim relief on hte interest he pays. The question is why would he want to do it that way and why not guarantee the loan himself?

The bank may be a little concerned, lending ?10k for a car means that should things go wrong with him, he can sell the car and at least release some money back to repay. He can't get that money back if it's in hte woring capital of the business.

Americans' knowledge of science varies widely

AP file

Albert Einstein knew a little about science for sure. (He's shown here in Princeton, N.J., in 1938.)

By Megan Gannon
LiveScience

Can you identify the gas that makes up most of Earth's atmosphere? If yes, you may be surprised to be among the minority in the United States. (Hint: It's not oxygen.) But if you know which kind of radiation that sunscreen protects against, you're in good company.

The American public's knowledge of basic science and technology varies widely, according to the results of a 13-question survey by the Pew Research Center and Smithsonian magazine.

About 78 percent of the public knows red blood cells carry oxygen to the body, whereas 83 percent know sunscreen protects the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays, the poll found. Most know the Earth isn't such a static place, with 77 percent choosing "True" over "False" when told that the continents have been moving for millions of years and will keep moving in the future. [Americans' Science & Technology Smarts (Infographic)]

Another 77 percent correctly answered that antibiotic-resistant bacteriais the main reason scientists are concerned about the overuse of antibiotics. That might be because superbugs like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, better known as MRSA, get a lot of attention in the news. But even though the controversial drilling technique known as fracking has been emerging as a hot-button environmental and political issue, only 51 percent of the public know that natural gas (not coal, diamonds or silicone) is extracted in the process, the poll found.

Most people seemed to know that having a control group is the best way to test a new drug to treat a disease; 78 percent said they would give the drug to half of a group of volunteers with the disease, but not to the others, then compare how many in each group got better, rather than just giving the drug to all the volunteers. Another textbook-science question asked for an example of a chemical reaction, and 66 percent accurately chose nails rusting over water boiling and sugar dissolving.

There were generally big gaps (often 20 percentage-point differences) between those with a college degree and those who?had only a high-school degree. And for a few questions, Americans with just some college education under their belts lagged far behind college graduates. For example, 76 percent of college grads knew carbon dioxide is the gas believed to cause atmospheric temperatures to climb; just 55 percent of those with some college experience got that question right.

Tech-related questions revealed an age gap in knowledge. Among people 65 and older, just 37 percent knew that nanotechnology deals with small things, compared with 76 percent of those ages 18 to 29. And just 27 percent of seniors knew that "Lasers work by focusing sound waves" was false (lasers focus light), whereas 50 percent or more of all the younger age groups said the same.

Women generally did not do as well as men on most of the questions, though they performed as well or better on health-related items, like the question about antibiotics overuse. And women (54 percent) were more likely than men (37 percent) to say that the main reason young people don't pursue math and science degrees is because they think these subjects are too difficult.

Generally the public doesn't seem to have great faith in the level of American students' science achievement compared with the rest of the developed world. A plurality of those surveyed (44 percent) believed 15-year-olds in the United States are lacking in science knowledge compared with their peers in other countries. In reality, the teens have an average standing. College graduates seemed to be most pessimistic about younger generations, with 56 percent saying American students rank near the bottom.

Pew says the survey was conducted March 7-10 through phone interviews with 1,006 adults. The complete results are here.

Keystone XL Pipeline Mired in Bureaucratic Wrangling, Civil Protest, Legal Challenges

The Keystone XL pipeline, designed to convey tar sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to oil refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast, still remains mired in controversy, finger-pointing, and what many consider to be bureaucratic foot-dragging.

EPA criticizes State Department draft review of Keystone XL

According to the Hill, the EPA has criticized the draft review of the pipeline project by the State Department. Because the pipeline would cross an international border between the United States and Canada, the State Department is charged with evaluating its environmental impact. The EPA charged that the State Department provided "insufficient information" on environmental issues surrounding the pipeline and failed to consider alternate routes. It suggested that the State Department depended on outdated models for the impact the pipeline would have on the development of the Alberta tar sands fields.

EPA accused of bureaucratic foot-dragging

Hot Air suggested that the EPA is engaged in bureaucratic foot-dragging, attempting to slow down the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline project in hopes of delaying a difficult decision until after the 2014 midterm elections. However President Barack Obama decides, he risks offending an important constituency. If he approves the pipeline, he angers environmentalists. If he rejects the pipeline, he alienates powerful labor unions.

Environmentalists pledge continued resistance

The Houston Chronicle reports that environmental activists are pledging "massive" resistance to the Keystone XL pipeline. Environmental groups claim that 60,000 people have signed a pledge to risk arrest in an effort to stop the pipeline with tens of thousands expected to follow.

Most Americans and Canadians support the Keystone XL pipeline

Yahoo! News Canada reports that despite environmental opposition, a new poll suggests that the vast majority of both Canadians and Americans support the Keystone XL pipeline. The poll, conducted by Nik Nanos, reports that 74 percent of Americans and 68 percent of Canadians who have heard of the Keystone XL pipeline support their respective governments' approval of the project.

Texas Supreme Court rejects Keystone XL pipeline challenge

Bloomberg reports that the Texas Supreme Court has refused to hear a challenge to the eminent domain process by which TransCanada, the company building the Keystone XL pipeline, is acquiring private land to build the section already approved to stretch from a storage facility in Oklahoma to the Texas Gulf Coast refineries. Besides environmentalists, some Texas landowners have objected to the building of the pipeline and had asked the court to withhold the power to condemn land for the building of interstate pipelines. Three similar cases are still pending.

Texas resident Mark Whittington writes about state issues for the Yahoo! Contributor Network.
