More Than A Mummy: Book Review: The Women in Black

I stumbled across this treasure at the library last week. After Mikey and Lucy had had enough of perusing the picture books, it was time to go and quick.

I ran my eyes along the fiction shelves searching for something, anything, that would capture my interest. Our library seems to have an abundance of romance and mystery novels. Blah.

Madeleine St John went to Sydney University in 1960 but didn't write this book until 1993.

The story is set in Sydney, 1960 and follows several women, working at Goode's department store (think David Jones). There's Mrs Williams (married to a bit of a goose but there's always more to that story), Miss Baines (the single gal who's just about had enough of waiting for Mr Right), Magda (the luscious, worldy Continental?who always gets her way) and Miss Cartwright.?

Enter 17 year old Lesley, working?casually over Christmas, while she waits to see if she'll be awarded a scholarship to University. She's naive and artless, but?after Magda 'adopts' her, the world suddenly opens?up and?she sees new possibilities on the horizon.

The tone of this book is what captured me. It's lovely. It's authentic and subtle. I could see?how this book could be overlooked?or?dismissed?as being chick lit but it's not really. It's a book about?women but it's not trite.

I am planning on going back and reading St?John's other?novels just as soon as I can lay my hands on them.

I?would highly recommend?this book to anyone who liked the No. 1 Detective Agency?books,?or if you like Jane Austen.

It is utterly delightful. I feel like I've unearthed this treasure and I want to share it with the world. What an addition to Australian literary society!
