Gaming Blend Monthly Recap: August, 2012

published: 2012-09-02 19:59:18

August is such a filler month in the world of video games. Nothing happens in August. Most big titles scheduled for a summer release usually end up on store shelves in June just after E3 and during the remaining summer months most blockbusters are practically absent, save for a straggler here or there. Well, August was no different save for Sleeping Dogs, Darksiders II and Transformers: Fall for Cybertron. The highlight of August, however, was not so much in the games that were coming out during the month, but more-so for the games simply planned to come out as well some fascinating business developments, including Electronic Arts and Zynga battling like Godzilla and King Kong over copyright infringement, City of Heroes finally biting the dust, and huge news concerning all things Metal Gear. Find out more in this August, 2012 Gaming Blend Monthly Recap of the hot items taking place in a cool town known as the gaming industry.

July 29th ? August 4th: Army of Two Devil's Cartel, World of Warcraft Subscriptions Are Down, Electronic Arts Sues Zynga The month started off big. July was winding down to a close and EA decided they needed to do something to regain the trust of gamers, so they decided to sue the most hated gaming company just shy of EA...Zynga. EA also unveiled Army of Two: Devil's Cartel this week and Activision posted some saddening news that subs for World of Warcraft are steadily declining.

August 5th ? August 11th: Rise of the Triad Returns, InSANE Canned, DayZ Gets Its Own Game One of the classic, uber-violent shooters from the 1990s is getting a redo thanks to Apogee Software and Interceptor Entertainment. The duo is reviving Rise of the Triad but they're not giving it a Call of Duty makeover, instead they're keeping it true to its roots and simply overhauling the tech behind the game. Guillermo Del Toro's inSANE was canceled that week, making it a love/sad moment knowing that a classic was being reborn while a new-school idea was being killed before it even had a chance to shine. DayZ also had an official announcement during the week as becoming its very own standalone game.

August 12th ? August 18th: Journey Used In Church, Funcom Versus Metacritic, Castle Crashers Crashes On Steam. One of the things that rarely ever go together is video games and religion. For whatever reason both seem to be highly adverse to each other, except for one church and one game: Journey. It's definitely worth reading about how one church wants to expand their services and open-mindedness regarding games, life and death. Funcom also laid all the blame of the poor sales of The Secret World on Metacritic. And during this week of August it was announced that one of the most beloved XBLA titles would be making the jump to Steam, hooray! I'm talking about Castle Crashers.

August 19th ? August 25th: State of Decay Rivals DayZ, Borderlands 2 Goes 16-Bit, Metal Gear Solid 5 Is Coming All this second half of the year has mostly been about a little something-something called DayZ. Well, joining in on the zombie-apocalypse success is Microsoft's own zombie-survival title, State of Decay. The hook for the game is that you can build up your own resources, factories and houses. It's kind of cool. Gearbox promoted Borderlands 2 during the week with a release of a 16-bit version of the game featuring loot drops, ugly bad guys and samey scenarios. Also, Metal Gear Solid 5 is scheduled to arrive sometime sooner rather than later, but not before Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes launches.

August 26th ? September 1st: Metal Gear Movie Coming, Guild Wars 2 Sells One Million, Hawken Coming to Consoles This was the last week of the month, closing out August with some of the absolute biggest news of the month as well. This includes Hideo Kojima announcing a brand new Metal Gear game called Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, which is an open-world stealth-action game. Guild Wars 2 gets off to a great start, selling more than a million copies right off the bat. Square Enix also confirms that Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns is in the works for current gen consoles, and Adhesive Games confirms that they are already prepping to release the highly anticipated, fast-as-flowing-water mech-shooter, Hawken for the Xbox 360 and PS3. A great way to round out the week and round out the month.
