Based in Seattle, Raikes Foundation is an endowed, private, family foundation that strives to be a catalyst for innovative, collaborative and pragmatic solutions to help youth reach their full potential. Led by the passion and strong sense of purpose of co-founders and co-presidents?Tricia and Jeff Raikes, the Foundation values compassion for others through service and community involvement. It takes on issues that are under-resourced and provides grant support for ideas that are both scalable and sustainable. Grant making is expected to triple over the next ten years and is currently focused on three research-based strategies that support key youth development and education issues regionally (Youth Homelessness), statewide? (Youth Program Quality) and nationally (Early Adolescent ?Middle Shift?).

Position Description:
Raikes Foundation is uniquely poised to bring greater visibility and momentum to the critical issues it supports. The Director of Communications is a new position.?Reporting to the Foundation?s Director, the Director of Communications will work closely with the program officers, co-founders and grantees to raise the profile of their work and advocacy efforts.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Strategic leadership on all communications issues
  • Development and management of a comprehensive communications plan, including metrics; establishment of consistent branding and messaging across all platforms
  • Creation of compelling content for a variety of communications vehicles, including the website, collateral, reports, press briefings, events.
  • Leveraging brand equity to enhance awareness of initiatives and build relationships with policy makers, senior officials, media, thought leaders, partners, and other key audiences
  • Guiding the strategic and consistent use of media, events, and public relations opportunities for co-founders, staff and other spokespeople
  • Secure top tier media placements to move the needle on key foundation issues; prepare releases, pitch stories, secure speakers, and speaking opportunities; orchestrate media tours and events
  • Identifying the Foundation?s?voice and bold point of view on the issues
  • Providing training, tool kits, tip sheets, briefings, guidelines for speaking engagements for the co-founders and staff
  • Guiding the implementation of strategic messaging framework for staff, co-founders, and grantees
  • Expansion of communications channels to include first generation social media strategy, research reviews, white papers, new content and protocols for the website and production of collateral materials

  • Skillful creation of comprehensive communications programs, tools, and compelling content across all forms of communication, including social media
  • Instinctive ability to know when to capitalize on opportunities and how/when to leverage the Foundation?s?strengths
  • Adept at managing the media and the message with various audiences across all platforms
  • Exhibit confidence, professionalism, and a high level of sophistication while preserving humility and commitment to the Foundation?s?team
  • Poise, discretion and the professional decorum?necessary to work with high profile leaders

Minimum Requirements:

A Bachelor?s degree is required, and an advanced degree is preferred. We seek a minimum of 8-10 years of experience in marketing, communications, media relations, public policy, external affairs or a related field. A strong foundation in writing for different audiences, strategic public relations, issue-based advocacy or media relations/training is highly desired. Work experience in a start-up or entrepreneurial environment is preferred.
