Do you have osteoporosis? If so, we understand the frustration that comes along with this limiting invisible disability. Osteoporosis can infringe on your life and restrict what you are able to do physically. Still, it is important to keep moving, even if you have osteoporosis. Believe it or not, being physically active actually benefits those with this condition.
Should you be physically active while having osteoporosis?
Did you know that (in most cases) someone with osteoporosis should exercise regularly? Of course, it is important that each individual consult with his or her physician about this before beginning an exercise routine. In general, though, exercise is beneficial for someone who has osteoporosis. Here are just a few of benefits that accompany physical activity:
?
? Increased muscle strength, overall fitness, and mobility
?
? ?Conservation of remaining bone tissue?
?
? Improved coordination, balance, and mood
?
? Lessened pain

Canadian with osteoporosis encourages others to ?keep moving.?
Evelyn Zaklan discovered she had osteoporosis more than 11 years ago after she experienced a vertebral fracture while bending over to tie her shoe. She was surprised to learn that she had this condition; she had previously assumed it mainly affected elderly individuals (Zaklan was only 54 years of age at the time of her diagnosis).
?
Evelyn was used to enjoying physical activity, and she didn?t allow osteoporosis to keep her from doing what she loved. Still, she was aware of what she could and could not do now that she had suffered a fracture. So how did she get back into her active lifestyle? ?She started by walking to the end of her ?driveway, and each day progressed one house further down her street.?
?
Meeting these small goals each day really helped Evelyn to recapture her active lifestyle. Eventually she became involved in triathlons, speed walking, cross-country skiing, and tennis ? and she did (and does) all this while having osteoporosis! Not surprisingly, Evelyn?s words of wisdom are simply, ?Keep moving!?
