COMMENTARY | It's going to shock a few of my friends-- and I'm truly sorry for that-- but President Obama is beginning to win me over. Before any conspiracy theorists come along accusing me of being a part of some CIA plot to take over your minds, I'm not. I'm just another American, living his life, just like you.
I've decried the man more times than I can remember for various alleged "crimes against freedom" both online and in my personal life. In the long run though, we can only judge the man by his record. With his recent scolding of tobacco companies' fight against accepting the new labels depicting the true dangers of smoking, I can't help but agree with him. Having watched my own father die slowly of lung cancer, I can attest to the dangers of smoking.
When he pointed out the silliness of passing the re-affirmation of "In God We Trust" as our national motto instead of actual priorities, I felt a little bit more draw towards him. I'm not the sort of man who will bow and scrape before any external authority, but really folks, there are bigger issues before us all and the re-affirmation was a huge waste of precious time. If we really needed a reminder of our national motto, any one of us needs to just look at our money. He made a good point.
I still agree with Winston Churchill having said, "That government governs best, which governs least." I will still disagree with the man over what seems to be a tax-and-spend spree against our gross national product. As an American I can never remain silent because a few sycophants want to label any criticism of President Obama as racism.
I will always demand that Washington do a little less legislating and a lot more shutting up, but on the whole, President Obama has dealt with a huge challenge trying to clean up a mess. Let's be honest with ourselves, at the very least.
Sure, he has his flaws. What human being doesn't? And when it comes to the administration's policies, we should address those. That's a big part of what our First Amendment rights are about after all-- the redress of grievances. But let's all be fair in our complaints. He's not evil. Let's all try to be reasonable. Could you do better?
