Director Lisa Cholodenko is celebrating after landing the outstanding film trophy for her hit drama The Kids Are All Right at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards.

The gay moviemaker was presented the award on Saturday by True Blood star Nelsan Ellis for the critically-acclaimed film, about a lesbian couple, played by Julianne Moore and Annette Bening, whose children decide to meet their sperm donor dad.

Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall was honoured with the Golden Gate Award, which is given to stars who increase understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) communities.

Gay Mexican singer Christian Chavez picked up the Spanish-language music artist prize, while 8: The Mormon Proposition was named the best documentary.

Glee star Naya Rivera hosted the ceremony in San Francisco, California, which recognises films, directors and stars that highlight issues affecting the Lgbt community.
