As part of a strategic planning process, the firm would list what it is doing and where it is headed and can determine if "what it is doing" has anything to do with "where it is headed" and trim back on irrelevant endeavors.
It starts with vision and mission: what we will be and how we will act to assure the vision. for instance: "We want to be the biggest retail store in town." great. What core values will you adopt to obtain that vision? "We will put customers first and exceed their expectations". Now, strategy: in what areas are we doing what we have set out to do and in what areas are we falling short. Now, tactics: we need a survey to see if our view of the workld is shared by our custoers.

Thats the value. not having "strategic planning" is called "shooting from the hip" or "winging it."

Strategic planning not only has a value to an organization but it is a necessary tool in life. What happens if we just live life without direction? More likely than not, life will be less fulfilling, less productive and less inviting.
Planning is directly linked to success?when making a strategic plan one will set goals and guidelines, identify objectives and obstacles and realize timeliness as an asset.
When an organization just like an individual, sits down and identifies their own faults, assets, risks and liabilities they discover a knowledge that will help them to become better. More efficient and possibly more focused.

All you need to do is break down the words for your answer ? Strategic, develop a strategy for the organization (ie. product development, marketing, etc)
Planning, what steps do you need to take to execute your strategy?

The value lies in successful execution.

If you don't know where your business is going, its going nowhere.
