MARSHALL - With the return of the Lyon County Fair to Marshall this week comes plenty of chances to see or do something special.
One of those opportunities combines a returning favorite - the Barnes PRCA Rodeo - with a chance to raise funds for cancer prevention.
Besides putting on a great show, this year's rodeo will also be auctioning off some very special memorabilia, said Dan Johnson of the Lyon County Rodeo Committee. The items for auction are a custom belt buckle, and Ram Rodeo chaps donated by John Barnes of Barnes Rodeo. The chaps are signed by rodeo founder Bob Barnes.
The rodeo participates in the Tough Enough to Wear Pink program, which raises money for breast cancer awareness and prevention, Johnson said.
"This year, we wanted to take it to another level," with the auction, he said.
When Barnes agreed to donate the chaps for the auction, Johnson said, things definitely went to that next level.
The pair of chaps, Johnson said, is a unique display piece for rodeo fans.
"They've actually been worn in rodeos," when Barnes was involved with Ram Rodeo, Johnson said.
The chaps feature the Dodge Ram logo and even signs of use in the arena, Johnson said.
"There's really a lot of history that goes along with these chaps."
The custom belt buckle, Johnson said, "is identical to what the cowboys receive, only it has the Tough Enough to Wear Pink ribbon on it."
Another exciting aspect of the auction, Johnson said, is that 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Tough Enough to Wear Pink.
The Barnes PRCA Rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Grandstand.
The Lyon County Fair will be featuring a jam-packed schedule with a little something for everyone, fair organizers said. Grandstand events will also include a tractor pull and demolition derby, and midway attractions by Cody Rides. Lyon County Fair president Scott Myhre said extra entertainment, including area band Xiphoid Process, and D.J. Chopper, will play near the beer gardens at the fairgrounds following grandstand events.
"It will give people some more activities to do," at the end of a day at the fair, Myhre said.
Overall, the fair looks like it's shaping up to be a strong event this year, Myhre said. Open class fair entries are up this year, and the 4-H barns have undergone some expansions to accept more livestock entries, he said.
