What Are TheEssential Qualities Of Leadership? |

Leadership and motivational abilities are very closely related, as strong leadership will motivate and strong motivation shows good leadership.

Your ability as a potential leader will vary, but if we can pinpoint just what leadership is and define some of the attributes of good sales leadership, we can all benefit.

Leadership has been defined as ?the ability to inspire willing action?. Emphasis is placed on the willing. But to understand leadership, we need to delve a little deeper than that.

One thing which experience has proven over and over again down through the ages is that when any group of people are thrown together for any length of time or for any project, a leader will emerge from the group ? one to whom they will listen and give their confidence and support.

Their position on the organisation chart or their title alone cannot make a person a genuine leader. They must have certain traits and skills, or they will surely fail. In business, it has been shown again and again that these skills can be learned and the traits can be developed in any individual who is willing to exert an effort based on strong desire and a true hunger for success.

Generally, a leader or teacher does not actually ?develop? another person. They encourage and inspire that person to develop themselves from within. Thus, leadership is, in a large sense, self-initiated.

Once we understand and identify the methods and characteristics of admired leaders, we can take steps to develop these skills and traits ourselves. We can analyse ourselves ? honestly, ruthlessly, objectively ? and identify which skills we need to acquire or improve (and those which we need to play down).

No One Is Perfect!

The perfect leader has yet to be born. We all have room for self-improvement. If we can agree upon what it takes to be a good leader ? what are the traits of leadership, what are the skills ? we will at least have made a good start. We should analyse every genuine leader we know and try to learn which qualities influenced us to consider them a good leader. We can probably agree upon at least five ? you may have a leader in mind as we consider these.

Qualities of Sales Leadership:

Enthusiasm:

We will all agree that enthusiasm for what one is doing is one of the first traits. No man or woman can install much enthusiasm in anyone else for something about which they themselves are not enthusiastic. Genuine enthusiasm does not mean a glib, backslapping, plastic smile type attitude. More often, the genuine leader?s enthusiasm is likely to be of a more quiet nature ? but it is there! It is shown by the manner in which they go about their work. Their manner of handling their job seems to say to everyone. ?This is important! It must be done right. It must be fairly and squarely done! And -?You Can Do It!?

Unless a person feels right down in their bones that the work they are doing is worthwhile, they can never consistently (day in and day out) act as though they do. So, if they have any feelings or doubt about the importance of their work and cannot get enthusiastic about it, the trouble is in the person himself or herself. Whether they realise it or not, those around them sense their feelings, their attitude is showing!

Courage:

Leadership takes ?guts?. The true leader has the ability to ?take it? when the going gets rough. Often the leader has to ?take it? for the whole organisation to keep its morale high. The leader has to face up to a new problem all the time. Indeed, many successful leaders invite difficulties just for the sheer joy of coping with them. The genuine leader approaches each day with a sort of ?joy of battle?.

Courage in leadership sometimes takes unexpected forms; it may mean standing up to a principle. (Has anyone ever known a real leader who was a ?yes person??) It means having the character to stand up for what you believe in without comprising or cutting corners.

It may mean taking a bold approach to a new idea ? sticking your neck out in support of something, which you think is worth trying. It means loyalty to your conviction.

Self Confidence:

An important requirement for the leader of today is self confidence. However, in making decisions about people, their motivations and the way they act or react, the leader can never feel completely sure they are right. The best they can do is to make a sort of ?educated guess? based on the facts they can assemble and then depend upon their past experience and knowledge to interpret them.

However, a leader can be self-confident. A great help is to know and work within their personal assets and limitations. They know what they can personally do and what they are unable to do. They are willing to listen to other opinions, assess them and be big enough to adopt the meritorious ones even if they do not square with their original thinking. They can take small reverses in stride.

A self-confident leader is never satisfied with their present accomplishments, does not spend their time in useless longing for things they cannot have. Rather, they set about realising their immediate and realistic goals.

Integrity:

A leader keeps promises. They keep their promises to their associates as meticulously as those made to their superiors. They keep promises made to themselves, which are the hardest to keep and failure in this is the easiest to rationalise. They can keep all these promises because they never commit themselves rashly; but always within the limits of reality and their present capabilities in terms of personal ability. Part of this matter of integrity is certainly, unquestioned loyalty to their organisation ? to its reputation as well as their own. Also they must have loyalty to their products and to their associates and loyalty to their industry. Loyalty to one?s associates is extremely important in any leader. They should never allow themselves or others in their group to ridicule, or down grade other leaders or people in the industry, as it is a sign of jealousy and this is one trait that cannot exist in a true leader. Part of this loyalty is a sense of stewardship ? a feeling of responsibility for the welfare, progress and security of the industry as a whole, and that includes everybody who ethically runs a business, everyone in their organisation, their customers and their family.

Interest:

Even the Oxford Dictionary has difficulty in describing the meaning of the word ?friendliness?. Of ?friendliness? it says, ?it signifies befitting or worthy of a friend?.

A leader has a genuine and sympathetic interest in and a respect for, people as individuals. A very high percentage of any leader?s day is spent working directly with individuals.

Be careful ? do not go overboard. Here there could be a danger signal. Friendliness can, of course, be overdone. Although interested and sympathetic, the true leader stays firm ? never getting so involved in the personal lives of people that he forgets the implications of their role as a leader. They never play favourites ? and should never play one personality against another. They know where to draw the line.

Humour:

Whilst not advocating that the leader be the ?life and soul of the party?, it is essential that they have a keen sense of humour. There will be times when an appropriate joke or light hearted remark, will do more to relax and motivate than all the arranging in the world.

These then are the six basic characteristics, which help a person to be a successful leader. Think of others. Upon reflection, you will probably agree that your ideas are closely allied to or even a part of the six detailed here.

They are not by any means a guaranteed panacea that will assure success as a leader. Though all leaders possess them to a varying degree, all of us have known people who have had them all, but were still unsuccessful as leaders. Characteristics or traits by themselves do not make leaders, certain Core Skills are equally necessary.

National Cancer Institute Researcher Admits Contraception ...

English: Institute: National Cancer Institute ...

English: Institute: National Cancer Institute (NCI) Category: Directors Equipment Laboratories Scientists Description: Dr. John E. Niederhuber, the Director of the National Cancer Institute (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) ??The National Cancer Institute has done everything possible to deny a link exists between abortion and breast cancer.?Now, the main NCI acivist who got the agency to deny the abortion-breast cancer link has co-authored a study admitting the abortion-breast cancer link is true, calling it a ?known risk factor.?

Scientists and educators about the abortion-breast cancer link point to a new study that clearly shows a link between abortion and breast cancer.?The study, conducted by Jessica Dolle, appears in the April, 2009 issue of the prestigious cancer epidemiology journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.?The Dolle study ? one of the first to receive recognition for highlighting the abortion-breast cancer link ? concerns the link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer.

The study examined women for triple-negative breast cancer, a subset of breast cancer cases with a particularly aggressive and treatment-resistant cancer type.?The data yielded a strong association between TNBC and oral contraceptives and found a 320% risk increase for breast cancer over those who never used contraception.

?When it comes to the abortion link, the study did not produce any new results but it cited the Daling studies from 1994 and 1996 that showed between a 20 and 50 percent increased breast cancer risk for women having abortions compare to those who carried their pregnancies to term.

As Dr. Joel Brind, a prominent breast cancer researcher, says?the kicker is that one of the coauthors of this new study is Louise A. Brinton of the NCI.?While the NCI maintains no abortion-breast cancer link exists, Brinton is the co-author of a study that is cited in this new research.??Importantly, Brinton was the chief organizer for the 2003 NCI (U.S. National Cancer Institute) ?workshop? on ?early reproductive events and breast cancer,? a panel which reported that the lack of an ABC link had been ?established,?? Brind says. ?(Coverup anyone?KH)

?In other words, since 2003, the NCI has firmly maintained the position that there is no ABC link; that the studies which had reported such a link were deemed unreliable. However, two of these prior studies were the very studies by the Daling group (of which one Brinton also was a co-author),? he continues.??Now, in 2009, Brinton is on record reiterating findings of the ABC link and reporting them as ?consistent? with earlier studies that found induced abortion to be a risk factor,? Brind says.

Karen Malec, president of the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, a women?s group that educates about the abortion link, calls the admission a scandal. ??Although the study was published nine months ago, the NCI, the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and other cancer fundraising businesses have made no efforts to reduce breast cancer rates by issuing nationwide warnings to women,? she added.

She says Dolle?s team reported in Table 1 a statistically significant 40% risk increase for women who have had abortions and listed it among ?known and suspected risk factors.???Obviously, more women will die of breast cancer if the NCI fails in its duty to warn about the risks of OCs and abortion and if government funds are used to pay for both as a part of any healthcare bill,? Malec said.

I received my Masters Degree in 2009 in Psychological Counseling with an emphasis in Christian Counseling. My ministry is geared toward victims of sexual and domestic violence, including victims of childhood sexual abuse, whether currently or in the past. Since I have personally experienced the healing hand of God in overcoming many of the life issues that Christians may face, I feel qualified and compelled to discuss them in a truthful and open manner, as God?s word tells us that ?We shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free.? God has brought me through such diverse tribulations as sexual, physical, and mental abuse, being a victim of a drunk driving accident, spousal pornography addiction, adultery, divorce, remarriage, a very brief, though unjust, incarceration, and having experienced multiple miscarriages and various other trials. I have been asked to leave two Southern Baptist Churches, due to my being a female, ordained as a minister, and fired from a SBC sponsored Christian School (mostly white) for speaking out against racial prejudice in the Family of God. Through God?s merciful forgiveness of my own sins and inadequacies and God?s grace given to me to forgive those who have been a stumbling block to me, I have overcome many of these adversities. God?s word tells us that ?All things work together for good to those who love the Lord and are called according to the purposes of God." Since I have this hope, I believe that God has blessed me with the ability to confront and relate these issues to the Christian community, and that I have been called to the homeland mission field of North America. As I have received the gift of God?s healing, I hope to be able to bring the peace beyond understanding to others with the message of God?s mercy and grace. My love for the Sovereign Lord of my life, Jesus Christ, along with my passion for writing has drawn me to explore these commonly experienced crisis issues from the perspective of my own experience in the hope that I may bring an empathetic and compassionate insight to God?s people. I am now a published author and have several books in publication, including my autobiography, "A Little Redneck Theology." The views expressed in my writings are strictly my own insights, acquired from personal experience and diligent study of the related topics and God?s word concerning them. Back in the Saddle | Some Wise Guy

Vacations are wonderful aren?t they? We recently got back from a week-long family vacation and it was just what the doctor ordered.

LK would ask how would I know what the doctor ordered since I haven?t been in years, but that?s another story.

rockaway beach

I think vacations are wonderful for what they are not about as much as for what they are.

Vacations ARE?NOT about:

  • chores
  • diets & exercise
  • email
  • deadlines
  • to-do lists
  • bills

Vacations ARE about:

  • family time (both quality AND quantity)
  • fun
  • laughter
  • games
  • ice cream
  • adventure

An unintended benefit of our recent family vacation was clarity. A reality check if you will.

Lately, I have felt somewhat fatigued by all the responsibility of being an adult while actively trying to discover and chase a focused dream (hence all the writing and reading). I was in desperate need of a break. A vacation was just the ticket.

A vacation is a getaway. That is the point. To ?get away? from the hustle of the daily grind and suck in lungfuls of fresh air. We spent time with extended family (LK?s grandpa is pushing 99 years old), ate a big pancake breakfast at a killer car show, kicked up sand at the beach for a few days, enjoyed ice cream for lunch and even visited Mount St. Helens.

It was a slice of Heaven. If Heaven was a double scoop waffle cone of Tillamook Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream.

If you?re feeling stuck in a rut or lost wandering in the fog I urge you to take a vacation. It doesn?t have to be lavish and expensive, but get out-of-town for a few days. See some new sights. Spend time with people who love you.

When was the last time you took a vacation? Where did you go? What is your favorite flavor/brand of ice cream?

GM signs Man United deal day after marketing executive exit

DETROIT (Reuters) - The ouster of General Motors Co's global marketing chief is related to a hugely expensive sponsorship deal with England's Manchester United soccer club for which GM is paying twice as much as the team's previous automotive sponsor.

On Monday, GM, the biggest U.S. automaker, announced its Chevrolet brand would sponsor the hugely popular club's shirts for the next seven years. The deal is worth $60 million to $70 million a year and includes a $100 million activation fee that brings the total value to as much as $600 million, said a person with knowledge of the contract who asked not to be identified.

By comparison, insurance broker Aon Plc pays about $31 million a year for the current jersey sponsorship, which runs through the 2013-2014 season.

GM did not disclose financial terms of its agreement, which was announced the day after the Detroit company said it was removing its global marketing chief Joel Ewanick because he "failed to meet the expectations that the company has for its employees." Sources told Reuters Ewanick didn't properly report financial details about the jersey deal.

Another source said the wording of the affected deal terms was changed before the deal was made public on Monday. The persons requested anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss contract details.

GM, which spent almost $4.5 billion on advertising last year, announced another sponsorship deal with Manchester United in May. GM said then it wanted to tap in to Manchester United's estimated 659 million fans around the world to boost the image of the automaker's Chevy brand, especially in Asia. GM last week also said it signed a four-year auto sponsorship deal with Manchester United rival Liverpool.

While GM would not discuss Ewanick's departure, some industry officials said a deal as big as the Manchester United sponsorship agreements would have been signed by multiple executives. They also raised the possibility that GM simply wanted to dump Ewanick as the automaker's U.S. market share has declined by nearly 2 points in the first half of 2012 compared with the year before to 18.1 percent.

"Joel was good for shaking up the staid GM marketing function and he made a real positive difference in just two years, but this episode, whatever it turns out to be, has tarnished his reputation overnight," said Peter DeLorenzo, Editor-in-chief of auto website Autoextremist.com.

AGENT OF CHANGE

However, sources said GM was committed to Ewanick's efforts to shake up the automaker's image. Ewanick, 52, was named vice president and head of GM's U.S. marketing in May 2010, about seven months before the automaker's blockbuster initial public offering in November of that year.

Brought in by former GM chairman Ed Whitacre, former vice chairman Robert Lutz and current North American chief Mark Reuss, the high-energy Ewanick was given free rein to shake up GM's marketing, which had been perceived as stale.

The first major effort under his watch was the "Chevy Runs Deep" campaign that launched at the start of the Major League Baseball's World Series in 2010. Critics say the campaign has failed to connect well with consumers.

When he was promoted to global marketing chief in December 2010, Ewanick said the move was intended to give marketing a seat at the executive conference table and a say in planning and budgeting for new GM vehicles.

Ewanick, who was credited with helping drive Hyundai Motor Co's fast growth in the U.S. market, steered GM back to sponsorship of high-profile events like the Super Bowl.

In May, he announced GM would pull its paid ads from Facebook days before the highly anticipated initial public stock offering for the social networking website, and said GM would not advertise on CBS during the 2013 Super Bowl because they were both overpriced.

Ewanick also led GM's effort to drive down the ad fees paid to broadcast TV networks during the advanced selling season that ended in June, said Brad Adgate, senior vice president of research at Horizon Media. The big four U.S. TV networks garnered single-digit increases from advertisers.

With his aggressive cost-cutting and a hyper personality some found off-putting, Ewanick clearly made enemies. One former GM executive, who asked not to be identified, received an email about the marketing chief's ouster with the subject line "Ding Dong, the witch is dead."

GM Chief Executive Dan Akerson previously said the automaker needed to focus more on marketing.

The "Chevy Runs Deep" campaign, which features the voice of actor Tim Allen, has aimed to focus buyers on the positive association many Americans had with GM before the long decline that culminated in its bankruptcy and $50 billion bailout by the Obama administration in 2009.

In April 2010, GM's Whitacre ordered the ouster of Campbell-Ewald, which had handled advertising for Chevy for over 90 years in favor of San Francisco-based Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, which is owned by Omnicom Group Inc and best-known for the "Got Milk?" ad campaign. Goodby worked with Ewanick at Hyundai.

Campbell-Ewald created some of the most memorable advertising campaigns in U.S. auto history for Chevrolet, including the "Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet" ads of the 1970s and "See the USA in your Chevrolet" in the 1950s. Industry officials said agencies that were cut may see Ewanick's ouster as a chance to get back in the door with GM.

Earlier this year, GM announced efforts to save $2 billion over five years by pruning the number of ad agencies it uses.

Chevrolet sold 2.48 million cars and trucks in the first six months of the year, and the U.S. market accounted for 42 percent of that total. GM is pushing to boost demand for the mass-market brand in China, Brazil, Eastern Europe and other regions.

Appealing to consumers overseas was a big reason for the sponsorship deals with Manchester United, which set terms for its U.S. initial public offering on Monday.

The soccer club's current jersey sponsorship deal is with Aon, which pays for the right to put its name on the front of jerseys worn by players during games. That practice is quite lucrative for soccer clubs around the world, but is not allowed by most U.S. sports leagues.

In a sign of how important the size of the deal is for Manchester United, the club revealed in its IPO filing that its revenue fell 3 percent to 5 percent in the year just ended to 315 million to 320 million pounds ($495 million-$503 million). Based on those figures, the annual value of the shirt deal is about 13 percent of the club's revenue.

In May, GM announced a five-year deal with Manchester United for what is known as its auto sponsorship in which GM replaced Volkswagen's Audi brand. Terms of that deal were not disclosed, but analysts said it is likely worth at least tens of millions of dollars.

Alan Batey, GM's North American vice president of sales, was named the interim head of GM's marketing. The automaker declined to make him available for comment.

PHILADELPHIA, July 30, 2012 -- The American College of Physicians (ACP) and the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) explore the ethical dimensions of the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) in a new position paper published by the Journal of General Internal Medicine: "The Patient-Centered Medical Home: An Ethical Analysis of Principles and Practice." The text is also available on ACP's website (http://www.acponline.org/running_practice/ethics/issues/policy/).

"The PCMH model of care aligns well with the traditional principles of medical ethics and professionalism, including the duty to promote the good and act in the best interest of the patient, the duty to do no harm to the patient, and respect for patient autonomy," said David L. Bronson, MD, FACP, president, ACP. "This position paper highlights some of the practical choices and implications of PCMH design and implementation that should be considered to ensure that this model of care becomes a key ingredient in better health care for patients."

In the paper, ACP and SGIM examine how the PCMH meets four fundamental ethical principles by facilitating:

  • a patient-centered approach to care, which reaffirms the core principles of medical ethics and professionalism
  • access to a personal physician who provides coordinated comprehensive care through an integrated team
  • involvement of patients, families, and caregivers in care, thereby supporting respect for patient wishes and autonomy
  • practice-based system improvement and explicit attention to quality

"The extent to which the practical implementation of the PCMH achieves ethical goals is likely to depend significantly on design features, such as the structure of physician payment and the measurement of patient satisfaction and experience, quality of care and patient outcomes, cost of care, and further health care reform," said Ann B. Nattinger, MD, MPH, president, SGIM.

Noting that many Americans are currently "medically homeless" and patients without access to care face a "perilous journey" as they try to navigate the health care system, the PCMH holds promise to substantively rectify this situation, bringing the health care system closer to the ideals of medical ethics and professionalism, ACP and SGIM say in the paper.

The organizations also note practical barriers to meeting some goals. For example, access to a personal physician responsible for coordination of care presents a challenge because of the shortage of primary care physicians.

ACP and SGIM say that the PCMH strongly supports the "bedrock principle" of patient autonomy because the concept of patient-centeredness that forms its foundation emphasizes patient engagement, provision of health information to patients, and involvement of patients in shared decision making.

By integrating system improvements into the practice environment, the PCMH could help physicians meet the ethical obligations for quality improvement and patient safety, ACP and SGIM say.

Minn. bikini parade falls far short of record

MADISON LAKE, Minn. (AP) ? Only an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny number of bikini-wearers turned out to strut their stuff in a southern Minnesota town.

Organizers had hoped for hundreds of women to march Saturday in what was billed as the World's Largest Bikini Parade.

But the number of bikini-wearing women ? and a couple of men in bikini tops ? at the Paddlefish Days Parade in Madison Lake fell far short of the world record.

The (Mankato, Minn.) Free Press (http://bit.ly/Mrt1N4 ) reported Saturday the number appeared to be 39. Women were told they could wear shorts over their bikini bottoms once it was clear the record of 451 was unattainable.

A majority of City Council members opposed the bikini parade. Some said it was inconsistent with the festival's family-oriented nature.

Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center: Ask the Vet: My Dog Does Strange ...

If men are from Mars and women are from Venus, then dogs must be from Pluto!? This article focuses on some dog behaviors that make us go ?huh??

My dog has these scary fits of wheezing and snorting with a scrunched face.?? What is he doing?

These fits are called reverse sneezing and we think they occur when a dog has a tickle or irritation in his or her throat.? Allergies, mites, infection, a foreign object (like a blade of grass), or even excitement can cause reverse sneezing. Small breeds tend to do it more than large breeds, although it can happen to any dog and has been reported in cats. Reverse sneezing is normal and not harmful. If you feel like your dog reverse sneezes excessively bring it up at your next veterinarian appointment.

Why does my dog eat grass?

We think dogs eat grass for a variety of reasons. Some dogs only eat grass when they have an upset stomach and the grass makes them feel better or helps them to throw up. Other dogs like the taste of fresh grass and graze on it regularly. Other theories are that grazing is an ancestral behavior, that dogs have a nutritional deficiency and yearn for fresh greens, or that dogs eat grass out of boredom. If your dog is vomiting and acting sick while eating grass I recommend you take him or her to see your veterinarian. Otherwise eating grass is a normal dog behavior. Avoid using fertilizers or pesticides on your grass if your dog is a grazer.

Why does my dog scoot around the house, dragging his bottom on the floor?

Dogs scoot when something is itchy or uncomfortable around their anus. For example, full anal glands, allergies, or dingle-berries (my favorite term for feces stuck in the hair) may cause discomfort and lead to scooting. Parasites, a skin infection, or an anal gland abscess can also cause scooting. If your dog is scooting, I recommend having your veterinarian check him or her out.

My dog is obsessed with chewing on his feet, why?

The most common reason for dogs to lick or chew on their feet is allergies. Dogs may lick their feet because of an allergy to trees, grass, bushes, flowers, etc, or certain foods. Other than allergies, dogs may lick their feet because of a wound, infection, foxtail, tumor or arthritis. Talk to your veterinarian if your pet is licking his or her feet more than normal, the paws are red or swollen, or if it is interrupting daily events such as walks, play or sleep.

Whenever my dog meets another dog, he instantly goes to sniff the other dog?s butt.? Why are dogs so rude about sniffing private areas?

Sniffing another dog?s backside appears to be the socially acceptable method for dogs to greet one another and say hello. We really don?t know why they do it, just that it?s normal. Dogs have multiple glands around their anus, including their anal glands, which produce unique odors, and approximately one third of a dog?s brain is devoted to processing smells, so we speculate dogs gather information about the other dog by sniffing under the tail. If only they could tell us!

When your dog is doing something that seems odd, it might be that he is just ?being a dog?.? What do you think dogs think about us? After all ? we?re ?only human?! Next month we will cover the strange things cats do. Send me your questions about wacky feline behavior to info@webvets.com, subject line: My cat does strange things. Russia to get stronger nuclear navy, Putin says

SEVERODVINSK, Russia (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin oversaw the start of construction of one of Russia's newest generation submarines on Monday and vowed to boost nuclear naval forces to safeguard the country's position as a leading sea power.

Warning that its navy would protect top energy producer Russia's interests in the oil-rich Arctic, Putin led the ceremony to begin building the submarine Prince Vladimir, named after the ruler who founded a precursor state to modern Russia.

The vessel is the fourth Borei class submarine, designed to carry one of the country's newest and most powerful intercontinental nuclear missiles, the Bulava, or Mace.

"We believe that our country should maintain its status of one of the leading naval powers," Putin told a meeting of naval commanders and government officials at the sprawling Sevmash shipbuilding yard in northern Russia.

Invoking Cold War rhetoric, Putin took a stab at the United States nuclear submarine forces, which Moscow carefully watched across the Atlantic Ocean for decades.

"First of all we are talking about the development of the naval part of our strategic nuclear forces, about the navy's role in maintaining the strategic nuclear parity," he said.

Putin is working to make the submarines and the missiles they will carry a cornerstone of the Russian navy, which will receive nearly a quarter of the 20 trillion roubles ($621.31 billion) to be spent by the end of the decade.

After nearly two decades characterized by a lack of funding, Russia is pushing to modernize its fighting forces, and redesign its armaments.

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the defense industry, Dmitry Rogozin, also said on Monday that Moscow was likely to ask state-controlled banks to finance 200-to-300 billion roubles annually in credits as part of the overall plan.

Rogozin said the move would leave more cash in state coffers as a safety buffer.

"We see what is happening in the world now, we see in what turbulences south European countries are, we see the problems in the euro zone," he said.

"That should not mean cutting spending assumed in the government armaments program," he also said, adding Sberbank, Gazprombank, VTB and VEB were among potential creditors.

EYES ON ARCTIC

On Monday Putin also said that Russia will have eight Borei submarines by 2020, by which time the navy will have received 51 new ships.

In a reference to Russia's ambitions in the Arctic, where Moscow plans to expand its claims, Putin said the navy would protect Moscow's interests in the icy North.

"Obviously, the navy is an instrument to protect national economic interests, including in such regions as Arctic where some of the world's richest biological resources, mineral resources are concentrated," he said.

Moscow has planned to submit a claim this year to redraw the map of the Arctic and give itself a bigger swath of the territory, which could hold huge deposits of oil, gas and mineral wealth.

Russia, Norway, the United States, Canada and Denmark are at odds over how to divide up the Arctic seabed, thought to hold 90 billion barrels of oil and 30 percent of the world's untapped gas resources, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Russia has said it will spend millions of dollars on studies to prove that an underwater mountain range - rich in oil, natural gas and mineral deposits - is part of its own Eurasian landmass.

Canada and Denmark reject the claim, saying the geographical formation, known as the Lomonosov Ridge, which stretches across the Arctic Sea, is a geographical extension of their own land.

The Borei submarine project, started shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union, had long been plagued by shortages of cash and furthermore by failures in testing the Bulava missile.

The first two Borei class submarine built, the Yury Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky are expected to enter service this summer, Russia's Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov was quoted as saying earlier this year.

Olympic officials blame Twitter for shambolic television coverage

Olympic officials have blamed Twitter for a series of computer glitches that led to shambolic television coverage of the men?s road race yesterday afternoon. BBC presenters struggled to work out who was leading the nail biting race because GPS data containing the competitors? progress was delayed.

Each competitor rides a bike with a GPS chip inside it which transmits vital data that charts their progress. But so many people turned out to see the race that the mobile network became overwhelmed.

IOC communications director Mark Adams called on spectators to think about how often they use their phones during popular events. ?We don't want to stop people engaging in this by social media and sending updates,? he said, ?But perhaps they might consider only sending urgent updates.?

Many viewers complained that BBC broadcasts had been riddled with factual mistakes, suffered from poor audio quality and missed key Team GB moments.

Viewers flocked to Twitter for a second day to berate the broadcaster over its coverage of the cycling, whilst others expressed concern that the male gymnastics team?s triumphant battle to reach the final ? a first in 88 years ? was not given enough prominence on BBC One

But the BBC defended its broadcasting stating that although the corporation has more cameras in place than ever before, much of its coverage still remains outside its control. Under the rules that govern how the Games are played, the broadcasting of the sporting events remains the responsibility of the Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) who pool their images to be sent around the world.

As a partner broadcaster the BBC?s coverage is also syndicated whilst dedicated commentary units are in place to cover prominent Team GB events. But given the sheer scale of the Olympics they cannot cover every event and are still reliant on the OBS to fill the gap.

The road races, which extend over hundreds of kilometres, are an example of an event where the BBC relies on coverage from the OBS to cover the length of the course. But viewers of both the men and women?s races over the weekend complained that made incorrect announcements or were confused about which positions racers were in.

BBC sport hosts took to Twitter to apologise for the errors. ?This is the Olympics,? said Gary Lineker. ?The coverage is from a pool of broadcasters from across the world. I?m afraid that?s how it is regardless of who hosts?

Co-host Jake Humphrey added: ?For those asking about more on-screen stats, graphics and info. None of it in the BBC control, we just take pictures provided to whole world.?

The OBS admitted that there were problems with some of the timings coming through to them, but they insisted the fault lay with Locog who are in charge of providing race data streams. ?If that doesn?t come through or is slow, we?re at the mercy of the system,? said one insider.

Mark Parkman, a spokesman for? OBS, insisted today?s women?s road race was not affected by the same data problems. : ?Today was much better,? he said. ?We received the data from Locog and its data provider and it made a great difference. ? However some spectators reported a lack of on-screen updates.

Coverage of the gymnastics on Saturday evening also drew angry responses online with viewers complaining that BBC One showed little of the men?s team making it to the finals. However a BBC spokesman insisted that the entire event could be seen on other BBC channels.

?The BBC carried extensive coverage of the gymnastics yesterday across BBC Three as well as in its entirety on bbc.co.uk/sport and the Red Button,? he said.

Overall the BBC has dedicated 765 staff across 26 TV channels to provide more than 2,500 hours of footage over the Olympic period.

Games opening sparks betting flurry on filmmaker Boyle

LONDON (Reuters) - Bookmakers expect record gambling on the 2012 Olympics after the opening ceremony prompted a flood of bets on event mastermind Danny Boyle receiving a knighthood - and confusion over wagers laid on who would light the Olympic flame.

Since London won the Olympics in 2005 gamblers have forked out on the closely guarded secret of who would light the flame, with British five-times gold medallist, rower Steve Redgrave, the clear favourite.

But in the end, seven young athletes selected by seven British Olympians lit the flame in unison, causing divides in the bookmaking ranks over how to handle the bet.

Ladbrokes and Stan James decided to pay out on all seven of the British Olympians involved which included Redgrave, Daley Thompson and Kelly Holmes.

William Hill voided all bets and refunded about 50,000 pounds ($80,000) wagered on the event since 2005.

"It is a bit disappointing as we've been taking bets on this for years and in the end there is no winner. There is no way anyone could have predicted any one or all of the seven people chosen," William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said.

Stan James said it had voided all losing bets, meaning punters got their money refunded.

"It's a once in a lifetime occasion and we thought it appropriate to make this gesture after such an incredible start to the London Olympics," spokesman Rory Jiwani said.

Bookmakers said the success of the opening ceremony devised by Boyle, who won an Oscar for his movie "Slumdog Millionaire", had ignited a feelgood factor and already boosted gambling interest in the Olympics - and not just in the sports.

QUEEN ON FILM

Boyle, 55, is being tipped to be awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours List by the Queen, whom he somehow managed to persuade to take part in her first movie role.

During the opening ceremony, a film showed James Bond actor Daniel Craig arriving at Buckingham Palace and escorting the Queen to a helicopter. Minutes later a helicopter appeared over the stadium and released two parachutists. The Queen then walked into the stadium to huge cheers from the 60,000 crowd.

"Everyone was amazed and wowed at what Boyle did last night," Ladbroke's spokeswoman Jessica Bridge said. "Before this Danny Boyle was 2-1 to get a knighthood but due to the sheer volume of bets we have cut this to 5-4."

She said the largest bet so far was 5,000 pounds.

Coral spokesman David Stevens said they were running odds on Saturday of 6-4 that Boyle is knighted next year, having been 4-1 immediately after the opening ceremony.

Jirwani said the ceremony had boosted patriotic pride with odds of 4-5 that the British team will win more than 22 gold medals compared to 19 in Beijing which could push them above Russia to be third in medal table behind the United States and China.

Bookmakers are forecasting between 50-100 million pounds ($80-160 million) will be wagered on the London Games, which would be four to five times more than gambled at Beijing but still way short of other major sporting events.

They expected plenty of money on football and tennis with some interest in cycling after Bradley Wiggins' Tour de France victory.

The men's 100 metres race, a highlight of the Olympics, was not seen as a great draw for gamblers.

Mark Maydon, commercial director of the Sporting Index Group, said the odds were against Jamaica's Usain Bolt setting a new world record at this event after stunning the world with his 9.69 second win at Beijing. Bolt cut this to 9.58 a year later.

He predicted the 100 metres would be run in 9.71 seconds with only half of the 8-strong field running under 10 seconds.

Sharpe said gamblers were not enthusiastic about the race.

"It really is a two-horse race between Bolt and (fellow Jamaican) Yohan Blake and gamblers like to have a bit more competition than that," he said.

Ramirez's HR in 10th lifts Dodgers past Giants

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:05 a.m. ET July 28, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Hanley Ramirez's daily chats with hitting instructor Manny Mota are already paying big dividends for the Dodgers.

Now it's even more clear why the Los Angeles front office didn't flinch when pursuing a deal for the high-priced slugger this week.

Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning and the Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 5-3 on Friday night in a matchup of the top two teams in the NL West.

"It's why I'm here," Ramirez said. "Manny Mota spoke to me and told me, `Don't try to do too much. Just do what you know how to do.' Every day he comes and talks to me. I have a lot to learn from him."

Two days after being acquired from Miami in a trade meant to boost the Dodgers' offense and playoff hopes, Ramirez went hitless in his first four at-bats against the Giants before homering to left-center on an 0-1 pitch from reliever Sergio Romo (3-2).

Ramirez's 15th home run of the season extended a stellar start to his Los Angeles career. The infielder slugger had three hits in the first two games with his new club and is batting .364 since the trade from the Marlins.

"Just another lethal bat in our lineup," catcher A.J. Ellis said. "That ball was crushed."

Ramirez also made a potential run-saving play in the field when he dove into foul territory to catch a throw from rookie pitcher Stephen Fife for a forceout following Matt Cain's attempted sacrifice bunt in the fourth.

It was exactly the type of performance manager Don Mattingly hoped for from Ramirez after the third baseman had some issues in Miami.

"Hanley's an intelligent guy," Mattingly said. "He's been easy to deal with."

Andre Ethier, who walked ahead of Ramirez's home run, had two hits and scored twice to help pull Los Angeles within two games of first-place San Francisco.

The Giants, looking to bolster their light-hitting offense, obtained veteran infielder Marco Scutaro from Colorado in a deal that was announced during the game.

"It's no secret we're looking for experience and depth," San Francisco general manager Brian Sabean said.

Even with their offense sputtering, the Giants didn't go quietly.

Kenley Jansen gave up back-to-back singles to Melky Cabrera and Buster Posey to open the bottom of the 10th. Jansen struck out the next two batters and then got Joaquin Arias to fly out for his 20th save.

"We needed that win," Ramirez said. "We have a couple months left and we're just going to go out there and keep winning series."

James Loney and Juan Rivera had two hits apiece for the Dodgers, who beat the Giants for the third time in seven games this season.

Shawn Tolleson (1-0) pitched one inning for his first major league win.

Los Angeles needed this one after getting shut out in three consecutive games here earlier this season.

The Dodgers got a stellar outing from rookie starter Stephen Fife and just enough from the bullpen until Ramirez's heroics in the 10th.

Fife was called up from the minors before the game to make his second career start and pitched into the seventh inning. He also helped end the Dodgers' 38-inning scoreless streak at AT&T Park when he doubled off Cain in the fifth for his first career hit.

Jerry Hairston Jr. followed with an RBI double and scored on Mark Ellis' single to give Los Angeles a 2-1 lead.

Before that the Dodgers had not scored at the Giants' waterfront ballpark since Sept. 11, 2011, including a series sweep earlier this season.

Los Angeles got to Cain again in the sixth when Ethier hit a leadoff double and scored on Loney's single.

Cain allowed three runs and nine hits over seven innings. The All-Star right-hander, who struck out two and didn't walk anyone, has only one win over his last six starts and was on the hook for the loss until San Francisco scored twice in the eighth.

Cabrera singled and went to third on Angel Pagan's one-out double. Brandon Belt followed with his third hit, a looping single to center that drove in two and tied the game at 3.

The Giants' biggest problem isn't their pitching, however. That's why they made the deal for Scutaro. He was hitting .271 with four home runs and 30 RBIs in 95 games for the Rockies.

NOTES: SS Luis Cruz has a 10-game hitting streak for Los Angeles. ... Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval is making progress and could return to the lineup as early as this weekend, according to manager Bruce Bochy. ... Dodgers LHP Ted Lilly threw a bullpen session and will pitch for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday before the team decides what to do next with the 36-year-old pitcher. ... San Francisco backup catcher Hector Sanchez (left knee sprain) played seven innings for Triple-A Fresno and might see time at first base before getting activated from the DL. ... The Dodgers placed LHP Scott Elbert (elbow inflammation) on the 15-day DL. The move, which was made to open a roster spot for Fife, is retroactive to July 26. ... A fan ran onto the field and made it to home plate before being taken away by security in the middle of the fifth inning. ... Dodgers RHP Chad Billingsley (5-9) faces LHP Barry Zito (8-6) in Saturday's game, which was originally scheduled as a night game before being changed to 1:05 p.m. for television.

Rebels dismayed over US statement on Syrian conflict

The key city of Aleppo has come under ferocious assault, bombarded by fighter jets and machine gun fire. NBC's Richard Engel reports from northern Syria.

By Richard Engel , NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent

NORTHERN SYRIA ? Syrian rebels are dismayed by the U.S. response to the stepped-up fighting around the commercial capital of Aleppo.

What is the United States saying? Are they not listening? Do they want us all to die? ? These are just a few reactions to what in the eyes of the Syrian rebels looked like a weak and confused American position on the ongoing war.

The rebels, who are battling the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, are specifically reacting to statements from State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.? On Thursday she said Washington is ?deeply concerned? about the threat of potential massacres in Aleppo, but that the United States will not assist in the supply of arms to the opposition.

?We do not believe that pouring more fuel on this fire is going to save lives," she said, adding that there had not been the kind of ?groundswell call for external support" seen elsewhere.

Syria's commercial capital has been attacked again by government forces. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

When rebels I?m traveling with heard that, they were shocked.? One young man with a Russian AK-47 by his side could hardly believe it.?

?This is completely the opposite of what we?ve been saying and the opposite of the truth,? he said.? ?If they give us weapons, or help us get weapons, there would be less bloodshed, because Bashar would fall more quickly. ?The longer the war lasts, the more people will die,? he said. ?

He doesn?t understand how giving him the ability to defend himself and 105-year-old Umm Ahmed, who still walks everyday even with an injured leg, is ?pouring fuel on the fire.?? The fire in Syria is already burning.

As for the groundswell, every rebel I?ve spoken to for the last month ? each one I?ve quoted in articles or seen quoted in articles written by other reporters ??has asked for outside help.? A rebel here explained it to me like this.? ?If a person is drowning, and you have a life preserver in your hand and don?t throw it, but only talk and say you?re sorry he?s drowning, then you are responsible too.?
