Incumbent Mike McGinn and state Senator Ed Murray lead the race for Seattle Mayor in a new, exclusive KING 5 News poll, less than three weeks before the primary election.

The SurveyUSA poll of 501 likely Seattle voters finds:

  • Ed Murray: 22 percent
  • Mike McGinn: 21 percent
  • Peter Steinbrueck: 14 percent
  • Bruce Harrell: 11 percent
  • Charlie Staadecker: 3 percent
  • Mary Martin: 2 percent
  • Joey Gray: 1 percent
  • Kate Martin 1 percent
  • Doug McQuaid: 1 percent

Twenty-five percent of likely voters remain undecided. The margin of error is ? 4.5 percent.

A look inside the numbers shows Murray has strong support from women, middle-aged voters and the most affluent. McGinn leads all candidates among voters age 18-to-34, Hispanics and people with incomes below $40,000.

Steinbueck is backed by independents, moderates and older voters while Harrell has support from seniors and Asian Americans.

The two candidates who receive the most votes in the primary will advance to the general election in November.

Although McGinn and Murray are solidly in the top two this close to election day, that?s no guarantee they will make it to the general election. A similar KING 5 News poll taken in July 2009 had then-Mayor Greg Nickels leading the pack by a comfortable margin. He eventually lost out to McGinn and Joe Mallahan in the primary. In fact, McGinn and Mallahan appeared to be out of the running just three weeks before ballots were counted.

July 16, 2009:

  • Greg Nickels: 26 percent
  • Jan Drago: 14 percent
  • James Donaldson: 11 percent
  • Joe Mallahan: 8 percent
  • Mike McGinn 8 percent
